Elena Gilbert, Caroline Forbes, and the Salvatore brothers rely on Bonnie's magic heavily throughout the series. She has fought Original vampires, evil warlocks and the Devil himself and demonstrated unwavering loyalty to her friends and family. Here are ten times Bonnie Bennett was the true hero of Mystic Falls in The Vampire Diaries.

Hell comes to Mystic Falls in the final season of The Vampire Diaries. Bonnie and her friends battle the Devil himself, Arcadius, who intends to engulf the town in hellfire and destroy Mystic Falls once and for all.

Bonnie struggles with her magic throughout the series but the scene in which she keeps the hellfire from consuming the town and destroys Hell is a great pay-off to her arc. The spirits of the Bennett witches reunite with her in an emotional tribute to one of the show's most powerful families.

Bonnie has proved several times throughout the series that she is fearless. The Bennett witch refuses to back down from a threat regardless of how powerful they are and puts her life in danger to keep her friends safe.

When Klaus Mikaelson first arrives in town whilst possessing Alaric's body in the show's second season, Bonnie channels the power of a hundred dead witches to take on the Original. The two characters clash again during the ritual and Bonnie almost defeats the hybrid until Elijah saves him.

Bonnie takes her heritage as a Bennett witch seriously. In the first season of The Vampire Diaries, she is hostile to all vampires except for Stefan and, throughout the show, works tirelessly to protect the innocent people in Mystic Falls.

Bonnie eventually developed a touching friendship with Damon Salvatore and a romantic relationship with Enzo that softened her stance on vampirism. However, she remained a passionately protective person who saved Mystic Falls.

Bonnie's friends owe her a massive debt. The Bennett witch has saved the day and the life of her best friend Elena Gilbert on more than one occasion, including linking Elena's life to John Gilbert's in season two to ensure her survival after Klaus sacrifices the Petrova doppelganger in the ritual to break his curse.

Bonnie and Elena's friendship is put to the test when the two are cursed by Kai Parker, rendering Elena comatose whilst Bonnie lives. Bonnie manages to break the curse in the series finale, however, proving that she is one of the show's most powerful witches.

Elena isn't the only Gilbert to have had their life saved by Bonnie Bennett. During the show's second season, Sheriff Liz Forbes accidentally shoots Jeremy and kills him whilst hunting Damon, prompting Bonnie to take drastic measures to save her boyfriend.

Bonnie begs the spirits of the dead witches to revive Jeremy, which they do - at a price. Despite being warned of the consequences, Bonnie refuses to let go and doesn't give up on Jeremy.

Bonnie has demonstrated more than once in The Vampire Diaries that, not only is she a powerful witch, but she is also a self-sacrificing martyr. Bonnie sacrifices her life to save Jeremy in season four and endures agonizing pain aftershe replaces Amara as the Anchor to the Other Side.

Bonnie has sacrificed herself and her happiness countless times to save the lives of her friends. She is arguably the most compassionate and selfless character in the entire series and the undeniable hero of Mystic Falls.

Other characters describe Elena as compassionate continuously throughout the series, yet Elena has demonstrated inadvertent selfishness that has hurther best friend Bonnie. In the show's third season, Damon forcibly turns Bonnie's mother Abby into a vampire to protect Elena, devastating the young witch.

Bonnie constantly suffers because of Elena's choice to pursue a relationship with vampires. Remarkably, the Bennett witch forgives her friend for this and the two have an emotional reconciliation.

Klaus nearly meets his demise towards the end of the third season of The Vampire Diaries. Bonnie plays a vital role in his downfall by using her magic to desiccate the Original hybrid and trap him inside a coffin.

Bonnie is one of the few characters who have bested Klaus, proving her immense power and dedication to preserving human life. This is the third time the Bennett witch almost kills the Original and, if circumstances had been different, there is no doubt that she would have succeeded.

One of Bonnie's most powerful and nefarious antagonists was the Siphoner witch Kai Parker. A disgraced member of the Gemini coven, Kai is first introduced in the show's sixth season after Bonnie and Damon die and find themselves trapped in the witch's prison world.

What Kai possessed in power he lacked in compassion. The Siphoner tortures Bonnie during their time together in the prison world, making his banishment at the hands of the Bennett witch more satisfying.

Bonnie's dedication to her friends was fierce and unwavering. She stands by Elena and almost dies trying to protect her friend from Klaus, creates a daylight ring for Caroline despite being reluctant to help vampires and sacrifices herself in season six to free Damon from the prison world.

Bonnie is an incredible friend and an undeniable heroine. She has arguably given more than any other character in the show to protect her friends and her home town, establishing her legacy as a powerful Bennett witch.
