The plot of The Vampire diaries contains every possible vampire trait that one can imagine. These include improved abilities, turn off their emotions and humanity, they can even compel emotions, manipulation of dreams, drinking blood, and even immortality!

Many characters from the show switched off their humanity. Most of them had to undergo serious consequences because of this choice. These characters switched off their humanities many times, but here are some classic moments from the show.

Stefan had switched off his humanity four times. The first time was at the age of seventeen when he did not intend to do it but accidentally did it as he was a new vampire.

Next up, Elena Gilbert turned off her humanity when her brother was murdered by Silas, in season four of the series. She wanted to cut off her emotions that she couldnt handle.

The vampires Enzo and Damon Salvador were tortured by Dr. Whitmore. This was a part of the Augustine Society. The society started experimenting on vampires since the year 1953. In the year 1958, Damon was lucky enough to get to escape. But he couldnt take Enzo with him because of the severe circumstances. He felt guilty and sad about betraying his friend, so he turned off his humanity to not suffer.

When Enzo got to know that Maggie was murdered by Damon, he turned off his humanity to kill Damon. He did not want to be sad about Maggie as well as angry at Damon.

Caroline Forbes mother Elizabeth died of cancer even though she had tried to cure her by vampire blood. She could not bear to lose her mother and turned off her humanity.
