Vampire Diaries: How Stefan Salvatore Returned In The Originals – Screen Rant

When Vampire Diaries' Stefan Salvatore made a crossover appearance in The Originals, he joined the fight against an ancient order of evil vamps.

The Vampire Diaries' Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley)made a memorable crossover appearance on the series spin-off, The Originals. The Vampire Diaries, created by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, chronicled the lives and loves of supernatural and humans living in the small town of Mystic Falls, VA. The show was so popular,Plec conceived two spin-offs, The Originals, and Legacies. The Originals focused on the exploits of the Mikaelson family, who left Mystic Falls to settle in their former home of New Orleans. The show featured cameos from several characters from The Vampire Diaries, including Tyler Lockwood, Caroline Forbes, and Alaric Saltzman. Nina Dobrev, who played the roles of the doppelgangers Katherine Pierce and Elena Gilbert, appeared during a season 2 flashback as the original Petrova doppelganger, Tatia. In 2016, Paul Wesley, who portrayed Stefan, guest-starred on season 3 of The Originals, playing a pivotal part in one of the season's most significant story arcs.

During season 7 of The Vampire Diaries, vampire huntress Rayna Cruz stabbed Stefan. Once Rayna's sword marked a vampire, they were mystically linked to her. To avoid being imprisoned in the sword's Phoenix Stone, a holding cell for the souls of the world's most deadly vampires, Stefan was forced to go on the run, during episode 14, "Moonlight on the Bayou." Stefan headed for the St. James Infirmary in New Orleans. Marcel Gerard bought the Infirmary during season 2 of The Originals and Josephine LaRue - Regent of the city's nine covens - cast a spell on the bar, making it impenetrable to magic to provide a safe house for Hope. Stefan encountered Klaus, who became enraged when he learned Stefan was fleeing the huntress, as Rayna killed many of Klaus' men in the 19th century. Klaus threatened to kill Stefan if he didn't leave, but after speaking to new mom Caroline Forbes, Klaus had a change of heart. When Rayna and Stefan faced off in the bayou, Klaus arrived and killed Rayna, saving Stefan's life. Since Rayna could regenerate, this merely bought Stefan some time.

The story played out on The Originals season 3 episode "A Streetcar Named Desire" (the episodes initially aired back to back), where Klaus returned to his home with Stefan and Freya concocted a paste for Rayna's mark that would mask the signal. Stefan's arrival in New Orleans coincided with an uncertain time for the Mikealsons, who had learned of a prophecy that foretold of the fall of the family: "one by friend, one by a foe, and one by family." An ancient order of vampires known as the Strix kidnapped Klaus and Elijah as part of their plan to break the brothers' respective sire lines, freeing "thousands of vampires across the world from the tyranny of the Originals."

Stefan volunteered to help Hayley, Marcel, and Freya to rescue them. The Strix's de facto leader Aya recruited Davina Claire to break the spell. If the young witch failed, not only would Klaus die, but so would his entire sire line, including Stefan. Woefully outnumbered and headed into enemy territory, Stefan removed the paste, alerting Rayna to his whereabouts. When she came looking for him, she took out many of the Strix. Rayna died in battle, allowing Stefan to get a head start. Before leaving New Orleans, Stefan and Klaus put their tumultuous past behind them. Stefan made a statement that foreshadowed his' and Klaus' fates, "Am I too optimistic in thinking we'll never see each other again?" Klaus responded that as long as Stefan promised to do right by Caroline, their paths were unlikely to cross.

Fans hoped to see more crossovers from their favorite Vampire Diaries characters during The Originals' fifth and final season. Stefan died in The Vampire Diaries series finale, but there was the chance he could have shown up as a ghost or in a flashback. When asked about reprising his character, Wesley told TV Guide, "I don't think so. I think Stefan has been laid to rest ..."However, Wesley did direct Legacies season 1 episode "The Boy Who Still Has a Lot of Good to Do", meaning he was able to stay linked to the franchise even without another appearanceas Stefan.
