Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 Combat System Refined to Make Players the Weapon – Only Single Player

Paradox Interactive has discussed reworking the combat system for Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2.

In the upcoming sequel, developer Hardsuit Labs wanted players to feel like the weapon by focusing on forward movement, speed of motion, and the power imbalance between humans and vampires. Vampires would inherently be stronger than humans so the studio tried to reflect that in combat.

Hardsuit also had to avoid the hurdle of kiting that many first-person games run into. In an interview with Gamasutra, Paradox Interactive senior producer Florian Schwarzer stated that he aimed to avoid making backpedalling a usable combat strategy: If youve ever done martial arts, youll find that your body moves in the directions of your attack.

Additionally, Schwarzer commented on AI grouping behavior: No human, even if they try to gang up on you, will behave like that because they have a chance of hitting each other. Your AI needs to reflect that.

When Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines released in 2004, it received criticism for its combat system. For example, the accuracy mechanic used a skill point system rather than player skill. This time around, however, the studio will translate skills into meaningful stats without taking control away from the player.

Another major shift from Bloodlines to Bloodlines 2 is the camera angle. Hardsuit felt that the third person camera would often impede players view during fights. Therefore, switching to first-person camera angle will provide a better sense of their surroundings.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2020.
