CANTON Student speakers at the Blue Hills Vocational Technical School graduation Thursday said they knew they didn't exactly have the typical high school experience. From choosing a vocational school to making it through a pandemic, this year's graduates took a different path from many other in their hometowns.

But they wouldn't have it any other way.

The Class of 2021 graduated in a twice-postponed outdoor ceremony Thursday night.

Co-valedictorians Karoline Ferreira and Shanai Watson gave a speech together, and spoke about how their journey through high school took them from timid freshmen to confident graduatesready to take on the world.

"I'll be honest, when I first walked through the doors of Blue Hills, I wasn't impressed,"Ferreira said. "As we spent our time here ... The true personality of Blue Hills and what it means to be a student herereally came to light."

"There are just so many moments that we can all reminisce about: Going to our first homecoming, getting into our shops, senior skip day just the other day and our intense games of volleyball and, finally, this moment we've all been waiting for,"Watson said.

Class PresidentChristopher Alcimbert talked about his experience growing up as a Black member of the LGBTQ community. He was often stereotyped and disregarded, he said, but the encouragement and support of his mother helped him through "dark times."

"A woman who taught me so much about love, hope, patience and so much more," Alcimbertsaid. "Unfortunately, I lost my mom earlier this year. I want to take a moment to thank her for being in my life and a huge part of why I'm standing before you today. I know, she would be extremely proud."

Thomas Polito, chair of the district school committee, praised the graduatesfor their grace and class amid a difficult year.

"You started remotely, adapted to Zoom meetings, missed proms, missed social gatherings and you even had to work through a two-year construction program in our building," he said. "To say 2021 has not been an easy ride would be an understatement."
