Houstons military museum, actors who were veterans and Armed Forces Appreciation Day – Houston Herald

As some of you Texas County veterans might know, we have a military museum in downtown Houston. It's the handsome white building on Grand Avenue across from the Houston Senior Center.

It's hard to miss, with those Civil War Hotchkiss Revolving Cannons out front.The museum director is Ron Jones, and he is assembling an index of Missouri veterans past and present as a historical resource and aid to the Texas County Genealogical Society. When the Museum opens again in March, Ron invites all Missouri veterans to stop in check out the exhibits of Missouri military history, and artifacts and vintage uniforms of all services. While you're in there, ask for an index form so you can add a short biography and a picture of you in uniform. Ron is a U.S. Army veteran and a new member of American Legion Post 41 here in Houston.

In other news, the town of Cabool has a century-old memorial arch on Main Street built to honor the memory of the local heroes who fought in World War I. The arch originally spanned Main Street before there was pavement in Cabool. Plans are being made to create a Remembrance Garden surrounding this historic monument.

Mel Brooks, the famous comedian and movie producer, served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the 1104 Engineer Combat Battalion, 78th Infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Christopher Lee was Dracula, he was Count Dooku in Star Wars, he was Saruman in The Lord Of The Rings, and he was a World War II veteran. Though not a U.S. veteran, he served as Flight Lieutenant in the British Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946. As an actor, he was asked to imagine what it felt like to be stabbed; he answered that he didn't have to imagine it, he had experienced it in combat.

An early heads-up: This is advance notice that American Legion Post 41, the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, Heart of Missouri Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 140, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 473 in Cabool will host the second Annual Armed Forces Appreciation Day on May 16 at the county fairgrounds in Houston.

The event will include a program to honor all veterans and families, a veterans fair, military displays, a car show, a free meal and special recognition.

Planning is underway to develop the best program possible to honor veterans.More details will follow.

Veteran's organizations in Houston:

American Legion Post 41 meets at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the meeting hall on the west end of Chilton Oil Company in Houston, just north of Pizza Hut. Changes to membership eligibility now allow U.S. veterans of all branches and periods of service to join the American Legion.

Fleet Reserve Association Branch 364 meets at 2:30 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month at the American Legion Post 41 meeting hall. The FRA exists to serve all veterans and active-duty members of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard.
