1954: Mathematician, computer pioneer and code breaker, Alan Turing, commits suicide aged 41.
1955: Dwight D Eisenhower becomes the first US President to appear on colour TV. On the same day, Indian prme minister Jawaharlal Nehru visits the USSR.
1965: Sony Corp introduces its home video tape recorder.
1967: Writer Dorothy Parker dies aged 73.
1969: Supergroup Blind Faith, featuring Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Rick Grech and Steve Winwood made their live debut at a free concert in Hyde Park. On the same day, Australian Margaret Court beats Ann Haydon-Jones of England 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 for her third French singles title.
1970: Writer E M Forster dies aged 91.
1975: Sony introduces the Betamax video cassette recorder.
1977: The Sex Pistols attempt to perform on a boat on the River Thames during the Queens jubilee, but are forced to stop by the police.
1980: Writer Henry Miller dies aged 88.
1981: Bjorn Borg wins his 11th and final career Grand Slam title beating Ivan Lendl 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 for the French Open.
1986: Chris Evert beats Martina Navratilova 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 for her 18th and final Grand Slam title and record 7th French singles crown.
1990: Michael Jackson is hospitalised with chest pains. On the same day, South African President F W de Klerk lifts the countrys four-year state of emergency.
1993: Prince changes his name to a symbol.
1994: Dramatist Dennis Potter dies aged 59.
1996: Make up inventor Max Factor Jr dies aged 91.
2001: Tony Blairs Labour Party wins another landslide victory in the General Election.
2009: Roger Federer wins his only French title, beating Robin Sderling of Sweden 6-1, 7-6, 6-4.
2010: Former Stereophonics drummer and BBC Radio Wales presenter Stuart Cable, was found dead at his home near Aberdare, Wales aged 40. On the same day, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh was granted a restraining order against an elderly neighbour who allegedly threatened to kill him.
2012: Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch committed suicide at his home in Nashville. On the same day, remains of the Curtain Theatre, where some of Shakespeares plays were first performed are found under a pub in London..
