Lee County School Board makes minor revision to Parents’ Bill of Rights – Wink News

FORT MYERS

The Lee County School Board approved changes to the Parents Bill of Rights during their Tuesday meeting.

The changes were approving a small revision regarding the services provided to a child a by a school.

Considering all the opinions thrown at the Parents Bill of Rights, the discussion during the meeting was very tame.

And in a rare sight, the Lee County School Board was almost in total agreement.

When Superintendent Christopher Bernier recommended the board approve a revision to the Parents Bill of Rights, a hot topic in Southwest Florida, opposition was surprisingly scarce.

The revision states parents will be notified if theres a change in their childs services or monitoring related to their mental health, emotional health, physical health, or well-being and the schools ability to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.

Only one parent had a concern not to the revision as a whole but to its wording.

I have made my comments about this particular policy beforehand. So at this time, I am requesting that the board consider those recommendations and they consider modifying the policy and come back after those changes have been made for adoption, the parent said.

The board took her words into account but School Board Attorney Kathy Dupoy-Bruno explained the wording was specific to the official statute and not much could be changed.

With that clarified, the motion for revision sailed through with the board voting 7-0.

The board wanted to emphasize the fact that the Parents Bill of Rights exists to promote transparency and accountability, so even minor changes, like the one during Tuesdays meeting, have to be made known.
