When a directors work becomes successful, whether in box office receipts or in critical reception (or both), then an actor or actors would be willing to work with him or her for another effort. Thus, actor/director collaborations are formed. And those collaborations would reflect the directors signature style since the actors present them as reliable players to their stories. (Or it can be nepotism for Ron Howards case of placing his brother Clint Howard in his movies.)

Here are just some of the famous mainstream directors who would always cast the same actors in more than two of their films.
Kevin Smith can be attributed for bringing microfilms to popularity. And it helped establish his View Askewniverse movies that started with Clerks and grew till the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Along with the journey is his close friend Jason Mewes, who always plays Jay in Smiths movies. From Clerks, Scott Mosier, Walt Flanagan and Brian O'Halloran would appear in every View Askew projects.
Among the famous faces who appear frequently in Kevin Smiths films are Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock, Harley Quinn Smith, Rosario Dawson and Stan The Man Lee. And theres more.
It is amazing the Adam McKay transitioned from over-the-top comedies to serious fare. Yet, he relied on his dependable players, mostly with Will Ferrell for their partnership under Gary Sanchez Productions. Before their partnership ended, Ferrell collaborated with McKay for the Anchorman movies, Talladega Nights and Step Brothers.

Some actors specialize for one genre like Seth Rogen (Anchorman and Step Brothers), Rob Riggle (Talladega Nights and Other Guys) and Christian Bale (Big Short and Vice). And some got onboard for both McKay comedies and dramas like Steve Carell (Anchorman movies and Big Short) and Amy Adams (Talladega Nights and Vice).
Spike Lee has been one of the most active African-American voices of the filmmaking world. From his first directorial effort in Shes Gotta Have It, he also provided an avenue for African-American performers to shine. But nobody is more prominent than Denzel Washington to appear in four Spike Lee joints; his best effort is as Malcolm X. But do not put behind Samuel L. Jackson for six joints; the famous of which is in Do the Right Thing.
Other esteemed collaborators include Delroy Lindo, Debi Mazar, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Wesley Snipes, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Giancarlo Esposito and John Turturro.
Martin Scorsese is arguably the best director of all time, whose films had a consistent streak of filmmaking quality. His themes range from inescapable family crime roots to the frailties of corruption. So, his films attracted many faithful collaborators. Among them include Harry Northup, David Carradine, Verna Bloom, Jodie Foster, Stephen Graham, Mary Beth Hurt, J. C. MacKenzie, Kevin Corrigan, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ray Winston and more.

But four actors are the most loyal: Harvey Keitel for Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, and Joe Pesci for Raging Bull and Goodfellas; and his two greatest partners-in-crime: Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Speaking of De Niro, he seemed to get along with David O. Russell after his collaboration on Silver Linings Playbook. Russells comedy-drama projects have been attractive to form cast ensembles since most of his projects center on dysfunctional families.
Mark Wahlberg collaborated with Russell, starting from Three Kings. Christian Bale and Amy Adams had The Fighter and American Hustle with him. And, along with De Niro, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence collaborated with Russell for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and Joy. And most of them gained an Oscar nomination; though for Jennifer Lawrences case, she won as Best Actress.
Christopher Nolan is considered one of the best working directors of the current generation. Thus, it would be ideal for any actor to go back to work for any film he has. He always brings in Michael Caine to play as Alfred Pennyworth for The Dark Knight trilogy. And apart from that, he appeared in The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk.

Among his frequent collaborators are Christian Bale for The Dark Knight movies and The Prestige, Cillian Murphy for Dark Knight and Dunkirk, Tom Hardy for Inception and Dunkirk, Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Inception and Dark Knight Rises.
The Coen Brothers have their own unique style of filmmaking. So, their black comedy tendencies over heavy crime sagas, dysfunctional family dramas and gritty Westerns can work for several people. That is why they have A-list talents like Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson and others in their movies.
McDormand started her team-up with the Coens starting from Blood Simple and appeared in nine of their movies, including her outstanding work in Fargo. Buscemi and Goodman acted on six of their movies, with both of them appearing in The Big Lebowski.
Even though he had a well-known lonesome personality, Tim Burton had a lot of actors collaborating on his macabre work. Some known talent that appeared in his movies are Winona Ryder for Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, Danny DeVito for Batman Returns and Dumbo, Christopher Lee for Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd, Martin Landau for Edward Scissorhands and Frankenweenie, and lately Eva Green for Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children and Dumbo.

But his most famous (or infamous) collaborators are Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, who first appeared together in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Then comes a dark connection.
If Wes Anderson has a distinctive style that can only be categorized as Wes Anderson, then his style fit with a certain amount of cooperative personnel who are confidently keen to absorb his inimitable filmmaking panache.
His most frequent collaborator is the seasoned SNL alumni Bill Murray, who started his partnership with Anderson ever since Rushmore. Owen and Luke Wilson kicked off their careers with Bottle Rocket; sooner, Owen will return to Anderson for The French Dispatch. Speaking of debuts, Jason Schwartzman had his start with Rushmore and had been co-writing with Anderson. Other frequent collaborators include Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and Jeff Goldblum.
Of all the auteurs of modern Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino paved the way for a new breed of filmmakers to embrace the independent filmmaking system and develop their capabilities to handle big-budgeted films. He accomplished that with a repertory company of stars in his films, whether they are fresh talents or acting veterans.
The most prolific of his catalog is Samuel L. Jackson, who appeared in six of his films, starting with Jackie Brown. The other well-known star of his is his muse Uma Thurman, who received fame in Pulp Fiction as Mia Wallace and the Kill Bill films as The Bride.
His other collaborators include Michael Madsen, Tim Roth, Zo Bell, Michael Bacall, Michael Bowen, Bruce Dern, Harvey Keitel, Kurt Russell, Christoph Waltz, Craig Stark, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt.
