Dwayne Johnson self-remakes and brings back The Scorpion King, spin-off of The Mummy – The Saxon

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock will produce a new version of the Scorpion King, coming full circle in his crazy rise.

We rewind. Long before Fast & Furious , San Andreas , Jumanji , Hercules , Max the Threat , Doom , Southland Tales and Be Cool , The Rock the wrestler wanted to become Dwayne Johnson the actor. It all started with a role in The Mummy's Return in 2001, where he was a big, bad thing opposite Brendan Fraser, which opened the doors to his first top-billing movie: The Scorpion King, in 2002.

Derived from The Mummy , this film looked back on the origins of Mathayus, the villain-not-so-bad. With nearly $ 180 million at the box office, on a budget of around $ 60, Chuck Russell's The Scorpion King kicked off the actor's career and even a DTV saga, since there have been four other films, without him.

And almost 20 years later, when he has become a Hollywood demigod with a bunch of boxes to his credit, and amazing salaries, Dwayne Johnson pays himself homage by launching a reboot of this famous Scorpion King.

Prince of the desert

Studio Universal and Dwayne Johnson (via his production company Seven Bucks Productions) are teaming up for a reboot of The Scorpion King, which will be written by Jonathan Herman (NWA Straight Outta Compton). A big difference already announced: this new version will have a more modern decor, in opposition to the 2002 film which took place in the Egypt of the pyramids, long before The Mummy .

Dwayne Johnson will not reprise the role, but could obviously point the tips of his biceps, just to come full circle. Because it is a story of honor and tribute for him:

The Scorpion King was my very first movie role and I'm honored and excited to reimagine and bring back this cool mythology for a new generation. I wouldn't have had the career I'm blessed with. have without The Scorpion King, and I'm glad that we at Seven Bucks Production can help create those same opportunities for other players today.

Dwayne coaching his successor

Beyond Dwayne Johnson who is already starting to look in the rearview mirror to recycle his own mythology (strongly that he is relaunching Doom and The Bewitched Mountain ?), There is a new lead for the future of the Universal Monsters . As a reminder, this name hides the studio's cult bestiary, which notably includes Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, the Phantom of the Opera and the Werewolf.

All these beautiful people had to come back for some sort of monstrous Avengers, which Universal wanted to launch along with The Mummy and Tom Cruise, as the Dark Universe. The very, very lukewarm success of the blockbuster (all the details of this oven here) stopped everything, and buried the announced projects, in particular a return of The Bride of Frankenstein with Javier Bardem.

What about us?

Since then, the Universal Monsters have come back right to left, in their corner: Invisible Man with Elisabeth Moss, Ryan Gosling as a werewolf, The Invisible Woman by and with Elizabeth Banks, a new Dracula by Karyn Kusama, or even Dark Army by Paul Feig. We will therefore have to add the next Scorpion King to the list, wondering if all this will really remain without any connection.
