Trump is gone, but his tune will play on – Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice

Editor: In Dracula, Bram Stoker wrote: Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!

On Jan. 20, 2017, Donald Trump was inaugurated. Much as many wish to see that as the unleashing of the children of the night, such was not the case. The voices of darkness and anger, bigotry and xenophobia were not so much released by Trumps rise as they were the vehicle upon which he arrived. These voices, and the sentiments they extol, will not, like Dracula, be vanquished by the sunlight that the Biden-Harris victory signals. Genies, neither friendly nor demonic, go willingly back into the bottle.

Joe Bidens history and his promise is the ability to work across the aisle, to find common ground, to reach compromise. The children of the night are not likely to let that happen. The Mitch McConnell-Lindsey Graham cabal sought from day one of President Obamas administration to stop him cold, to bring him down. Much to his credit, Obama, at least at the outset of the first term, sought conciliation and common ground with the Republicans.

Their only goal was to undermine Obamas presidency and regain control of the administrative branch of the government.

President-elect Biden must know that McConnell and Graham have no interest in seeing America and the American working and middle classes succeed. They only seek power, political advantage and the expansion of the suzerainty of Americas oligarchs.

The loyal opposition embraces and advances the fears, the small-mindedness, the xenophobia and bigotry that have been legitimized by Trumpism. The music From the children of the night exemplified by birtherism, alternative facts and QAnon, plays on as loud as ever. All that has changed is the location of one of its champions.
