Van Helsing is getting a movie reboot with The Conjuring creator – Digital Spy

Van Helsing is returning to hunt down more vampires, as The Conjuring creator James Wan is planning a movie reboot for the classic character.

The screenwriter behind the upcoming Black Widow film, Eric Pearson, has written a new take on Van Helsing which will be directed by Overlord filmmaker Julius Avery.

Wan will produce the as-yet-untitled project for Universal, according to The Hollywood Reporter, though casting details are still to be revealed.

Van Helsing is best known through many adaptations of the story as a vampire hunter and the arch-enemy of Count Dracula.

In 2004, Hugh Jackman fronted the period horror movie Van Helsing, which acted as a homage to the Universal Horror Monster films from the 1930s and 1940s.

Jackman's Helsing came up against monsters such as Dracula, the Wolfman and Mr Hyde, but despite grossing over $300 million worldwide, the movie from The Mummy (1999) director Stephen Sommers received mostly negative reviews and was unable to spin off a franchise.

After the poor performance of Tom Cruise's The Mummy in 2017 and then deciding to cancel its plans for a new monster universe, Universal turned its fortunes around earlier this year with The Invisible Man, which grossed $134 million worldwide against a $7 million budget.

The studio now has more monster movies on the way to spook us, including Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell's The Wolfman, starring Ryan Gosling, and a new Dracula film from Destroyer director Karyn Kusama although there's no word if Van Helsing will turn up in either of these just yet.
