Worzel Gummidge is returning in two one-hour films over the Christmas season – JOE.ie

With news that Mrs.Brown's Boys, Doctor Who, Dracula, the Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special, and more are all featuring on the BBC's Christmas lineup, another title may have slipped under the radar.

Well, there's a strong nostalgic draw regarding the return ofWorzel Gummidge.

Oh, yes!

The walking, talking scarecrow with the big evil laugh is returning to BBC One this Christmas in a modern adaptation of Barbara Euphan Todds classic childrens books.

Set to be broadcast in two one-hour films, the first episode gets underway when Susan (India Brown) and John (Thierry Wickens) come across a chaos-creating living scarecrow. They're soon pulled into an adventure of misbelief and mischief.

Mackenzie Crook (The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean), who writes, directs and stars as the titular scarecrow, has recruited a host of talent for the new adaptation.

Michael Palin (Monty Python) will play the scarecrows creator, The Green Man, with Zo Wanamaker (Britannia) taking on the role of Lady Bloomsbury Barton. Alongside them will be Steve Pemberton (Inside No 9) as Mr Braithwaite and Vicki Pepperdine (Sally4Ever) as Aunt Sally.

Of course, Mackenzie Crook takes over the titular role from the late Jon Pertwee.

For those that may not be familiar with the show, it's inspired by the books of Barbara Euphan Todd which feature a scarecrow who could change heads depending on his mood.

On the role, Mackenzie Crook said: "I'm thrilled to be back working with the BBC and many members of the Detectorists team to bring Worzel Gummidge to a new generation of viewers and reintroduce him to old friends.

"Adapting Barbara Euphan Todd's books into these two films has been a joy and I've completely fallen for her charming, irreverent scarecrow."

At present, no exact broadcast date for the new adaptation ofWorzel Gummidge has been given but we're certain that fans will be tuned in.
