Some cultural fears from old classic horror movies turned out to be pretty valid. These movies predicted today's society...
Crunchy leaves and pumpkin spice lattes are just some of the things that start appearing as the calendar turns from summer to fall. By October, horror movie fans are deciding which movies to hunker down with, with only the best being saved for Halloween night (hopefully with a pile of candy).

While some recent releases are just as well-crafted,there is a handful of classic horror movies which stand outfrom the restthanks totheir premises, storytelling, and character development. There are a lot of lessons in these older films that actually predicted some of the things that people would be worried and scared of in 2020.
The 2010 reboot isn't great, but 1984'sA Nightmare On Elm Streetis one of the besthorror movies ever. It definitely reflects society today, as it's about a group of parents who are terrified of pedophile Freddy Kreuger. They will do anything within their power to protect their kids, and they go after him one day.
This is still very relevant today, as parents are always keeping an eye on their children, especially when it comes to screen time and whether they're visiting websites that they shouldn't be.
1978'sHalloweenis belovedand the story of Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) babysitting and coming across terrifying Michael Myers will always be perfect viewing around October 31st.
This is not only an incredibly well-done movie, but it also reflects society today as it's about the whole "stranger danger" concept. People always want to keep their doors locked and they never want to hear that a dangerous person lurks in their seemingly perfect neighborhood.
Candyman, which was released in 1992, is about a spirit from the 19th century who goes by that name. Candyman fell in love with a white woman and because he was a slave's child, he was killed.

The summer of 2020 has been a difficult one with many tragic deaths andCandymanwas groundbreaking as it was a horror movie that discussed racism. This movie is so relevant that Jordan Peele is making a reboot.
There have been several horror films setatcampbut, of course, the best one is 1980'sFriday The 13th. The first movie in the series features teenagers at Camp Crystal Lake who witness Jason Voorhees's mom going on a horrifying killing spree.
There are always going to be people who worry about teens having sex and partying, especially when off at summer camp and not under any supervision, just like there will always be people who are afraid of someone who seems different from them. The way that characters treated Jason Voorhees was definitely heartbreaking, and the theme of bullying is still relevant today. Of course, no one has any sympathy that he has killed so many people since.
InSilence Of The Lambs, which came out in 1991, Clarice Sterling (Jodie Foster) talks to serial killer Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins) in order to get inside the mind of another killer, Buffalo Bill.
This movie predicted the fascination that people now have with serial killers and true crime in general. This genre has exploded in recent years, thanks tothe podcastSerialand many TV shows and documentaries.
With two remakes, one in 2006 and one in 2019,the original premise of the 1974 movieBlack Christmasstill holds up today. Itfollows a group of sorority sisters who arestalked in their house during the holidays.

These days, people hear more and more horror stories about sororities, from hazing to even more disturbing behavior, and this movie predicted how much people would talk about this part of campus life. The 2019 movie also bringsa feminist element to the story.
Stephen King has penned some screenplaysbut one of the most famous film adaptations of his work has got to beCarrie. Released in 1976, the story follows a teenage girl who is teased and tormented at school and even gets pig's blood thrown at her on Prom Night.
There are a lot of themes in this movie that still ring true today, from the horror of being a high school girl to how mean people can be to how scared some people are of others who seem different from them.
The ending of 1968'sRosemary's Babyis one of the best, and it's an intelligent and interesting film that tells the story of a pregnant woman (Mia Farrow) who starts living her worst nightmare.

People are fascinated by cults today, and it's fair to say that the people who take over Rosemary's pregnancy and want her to literally give birth to the devil are in that group. The movie also has a lot of relevance as everyone tries to get involved in Rosemary's pregnancy and everyone has an opinion. This happens a lot now as people have thoughts on everything from prenatal vitamins to whether to have a home or hospital birth.
Released in 1980, the classic horror movieThe ShiningfollowsJack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) as he stays in a hotel to write and starts losing it .
This movie is still relevant in 2020, as people talk about mental health more than ever before and there is thankfully a much more compassionate attitude towards these types of struggles.
Released in 1974,The Texas ChainsawMassacreplays into a lot of fearsthat people have, from death to strangers.
The main characters come across Leatherface at a creepy gas station, and that definitely is still something that would be scary today, as many people have felt unsettled while making stops during a road trip. The horror movie isn't necessarily based on a true tale, but the seed of an idea came from a killer in the 1950's.
