5 Horror movies to give you sleepless nights this October Barrie 360 – Barrie 360

The month of October isnt just for wearing sweaters and drinking pumpkin spice lattes, its also the best time to get your fill of excellent horror movies. If youre looking for a good scare, you cant go wrong with these picks!

How could things get any worse? Wait, dont answer that. After a single mother loses her husband to a violent death, she must also contend with a misbehaving son who sees a demon in every shadow. All this would be bad enough but she soon begins to see them herself after she mysteriously finds a childrens book called The Babadook. Is it real or is she just losing her mind?

Seeing as were on the lookout for good horror, lets take a look at the work of arguably the best horror director working today: Ari Aster. Hereditary is for those who like a little nuance in their movies instead of the usual jump-scare tropes that litter bad horror movies. Yes, theres another tormented family in another seemingly haunted house, but trust us when we say this one is anything but your run of the mill horror movie.

Midsommer is one of the most unsettling movies you will ever watch for several reasons. Its setting, direction and characters are all superb, but the thing that really tips it over the edge is just how stark a contrast it has between its imagery and its subject matter. The movie is breathtakingly beautiful and takes place almost entirely in the sunny daytime, but that is only to mask just how dark and unnerving it really is.

If youre in the mood for a horror movie (of sorts) but dont actually want to be scared, this is a hilarious alternative. When two friends head up to their cottage for a boys weekend full of fishing and drinking, one misunderstanding after another causes a group of teens to mistake them for psychotic killers. Tucker & Dale vs Evil takes all the classic slasher tropes and turns them on their head.

Whether you watch the original or the shot-for-shot remake that came out in 2007, you cant go wrong with this one. While the last movie was also a satire of the horror genre, Funny Games goes to a far darker place in its breaking of genre conventions. Fair warning: it will leave a sour taste in your mouthbut thats sort of the point isnt it?
