2009 saw two horror movie remakes - Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine - featuring Supernatural stars, but which one is the better movie? While both Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles had appeared in horror films prior, the primary reason they both ended up taking part in slasher remakes in the same year was due to the 2008 writers' strike in Hollywood. That development allowed the two actors a rare opportunity to step outside Supernatural, and star in two films that had presumably been written prior to the strike.

In practice though, the pair playing major roles in two different horror remakes in the same year felt oddly appropriate, as so much of their lives and careers have run parallel since joining Supernatural. Padalecki no doubt ended up with the more prestigious gig of the two, getting to share the screen with Jason Voorhees. On the other hand, My Bloody Valentine wasn't a well-worn franchise like Friday the 13th, offering Ackles the chance to play around in more unpredictable territory.

Both Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine's 2009 editions have their fans and detractors, although it seems likely hardcore Supernatural fans have long since seen them both. The question at hand now becomes, which movie is better?

Friday the 13th tells a pretty standard tale for the franchise, although it's not really a remake of the original, outside of a few minutes. It fast-forwards so that Jason can arrive and do his thing, and can't really be faulted for that. What it can be faulted for is making Jason do weird stuff like take prisoners and grow marijuana to lure in victims. Meanwhile My Bloody Valentine is closer to a straightforward remake, but does flip the script a bit, changing the identity of the killer in a bid to make things less obvious to fans of the original. My Bloody Valentine gets the point.

It's hard not to immediately go with Friday the 13th in this category, as Jason Voorhees is one of the most iconic slashers in history, and the hulking Derek Mears took the role very seriously, despite some of the odd changes to Jason's methods. That's not to shortchange "Harry Warden" aka The Miner since both times it's not actually Harry in the end. He's got a great look, and the pickax is a great signature weapon. Still, Friday the 13th gets the point.

This category is actually tough, as both Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine 2009 are hard-R movies when it comes to violence and gore. Both movies also have lots of nudity for those concerned. However, Friday the 13th gets the duke here due to Jason being a bit more inventive with his murder implements, doing unbelievably cruel things like roasting a person alive inside a sleeping bag and throwing an ax into someone's back. Everyone The Miner kills is done in via pickax, and while they're all brutal variations, it still gets a bit repetitive.
