Theres an argument to be made that The Wicker Man, director Robin Hardys folk-horror cult classic, isnt just one of the best horror movies ever madeits one of the best movies ever made, period. Thats an argument I, personally, agree with whole-heartedly. Simply put, theres no other film quite like it. Edward Woodward stars as devoutly religious Scottish cop Sgt. Howie, who receives an anonymous tip that a teenage girl on a remote island has vanished and runs afoul of the pagan community to which the girl belonged, with Christopher Lee presiding as its towering, preening lord. Gorgeous music by Paul Giovanni and Magnet, based on traditional ballads and poetry, peppers the story as Sgt. Howie is drawn deeper and deeper into the island of Summerisles mysteries, until the film reaches its genuinely bone-chilling climax. You have to get on the films wavelength to fully appreciate it, but once you do, youre in for horror like youve never seen before.
