Sonequa Martin-Green did not leave The Walking Dead because of her new role in Star Trek: Discovery.

When she was confirmed for Star Trek in December, it led Walking Dead viewers to assume that it meant Sasha was about to be offed, but Martin-Green says her Star Trek talks came AFTER Sasha's fate had been decided.

"I know some people might think that I left Walking Dead to do Star Trek, but it did not happen that way. It was after Walking Dead was already ending that the opportunity for Star Trek came," she told EW.

Sasha was the major casualty of Walking Dead's season seven finale as she chose to turn herself into a walker to save Rick and the gang.

And Martin-Green reckons her exit couldn't have "worked out more perfectly".

"I didn't know what I was going to be doing next. And when Star Trek came I thought, 'Oh my goodness! This is... unspeakable! Like, what??' It's going from such a Goliath that reaches so many people in such a profound way, to a legacy," she explained.

"So basically going from legacy to legacy. Because Star Trek has definitely been printed in the hearts of so many people and has been since the '60s, obviously."

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Martin-Green is playing First Officer Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, with the history-making character being the first Star Trek lead not to be a captain.

Star Trek: Discovery is expected to air in late summer or early autumn on CBS All Access in the US. Netflix will screen the series in the UK.
