The Walking Dead cast member teases Jesus’ season 9 boyfriend – Digital Spy

The Walking Dead favourite Tom Payne has revealed that his character Jesus was given a boyfriend in a deleted season 9 scene.

Before succumbing to the Whisperers in season 9's mid-season finale, Jesus (real name Paul Rovia) had been known as gay since season 7 episode 14, as he told Maggie about his issues getting close to "neighbours, friends, boyfriends".

In a recent appearance on the Talk Dead to Me podcast, Tom shared the behind-the-scenes titbit.

"Because we had that six-year time jump, I was always like, 'I think [Aaron and Jesus] had a dalliance in those six years, and they just became friends afterwards.' Which is nice," he explained.

"There was an iteration of the first episode of season 9 [where] I had a boyfriend in the first script, at Hilltop."

This mystery character wasn't unmasked during Tom's interview, but Jesus and Aaron were partners in Robert Kirkman's original graphic novels.

Back in April, the actor admitted that his season 9 exit felt like the right time to leave.

"Ultimately it came down to just happiness in my job, and I was just like, 'Well, I've done this for three years,' and that was the longest I've ever done any acting job," Tom said.

"And I had kind of done everything that I wanted to do on the show, and I didn't really see the point in hanging around and just waiting for something to happen."

The Walking Dead's season 10 finale will air as a special episode later this year on FOX in the UK. You can also catch up on the show via NOW TV. In the US, the show airs on AMC.
