The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon was meant to be gay originally – Digital Spy

How different would The Walking Dead be if Frank Darabont was still in charge?

Darabont was the AMC drama's first showrunner, but stepped down in July 2011 in bizarre and to this day still unclear circumstances.

But one of the things he was interested in doing was giving fan favourite character Daryl Dixon a gay storyline.

Norman Reedus told The Mirror that Darabont approached him about the idea.

"There was a time on the show where Frank was going to have me be gay, but he won't admit it," he said.

"If he admits it, like, he'll kill you. He referred to it as 'prison gay', and I didn't know what that meant."

Reedus added: "It never happened, obviously, but I'm not against it and if it happened, I would be down for it and I'd try to kick ass at it, but I don't know if that's where we're going with it."

Indeed, Greg Nicotero has no plans right now for such a storyline, it seems.

The Walking Dead boss flat-out dismissed the possibility of a romance between Daryl and Jesus (Tom Payne) when asked about it recently.

The latest episode ('Say Yes') saw Rick and Michonne spend some quality time together at a fun fair to scavenge weapons for the Heapsters.

Meanwhile, Rosita and Sasha have teamed up to take down Negan in what appears to be a suicide mission, and Tara finally decided to tell Rick the truth about Oceanside.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX in the UK.
