Everyone Is Just Now Figuring Out What We Do In The Shadows Is The Funniest Show On TV – Forbes

What We Do In The Shadows

I read an article recently that I will not name because it called FXs What We Do In The Shadows the perfect quarantine show because it was about a bunch of people who are mostly stuck in the house. This isa bit of a reach, and theyre inside most of the time because theyrevampires. But I will agree that the show deserves the newfound spotlight it appears to be getting here in season 2. If its the perfect quarantine show, its because its hilarious, and will take you away from the misery of a public health crisis and economic collapse for 25 minutes at a time.

Maybe why What We Do In The Shadows recommendations are spreading so rapidly is because season 2 has just been that damn good so far.

The original series is a spin-off of the equally overlooked vampire comedy from 2014, also called What We Do In The Shadows, the pet project of Jemaine Clement, of Flight of the Conchords fame, and Taika Waiti, of Thor Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit and soon to be Star Wars fame. Both starred in the original as well as the central vampires.

The movie, if you had never heard of these two guys, looks like some bad sort of Scary Movie parody, but the pair are brilliant enough to do vampire parody correctly. This resulted in the same-titled FX series a few years later with a new central cast, four vampires and one familiar. Season 2 is currently going on now, six episodes into ten total. There are reports of a werewolf spin-off in the works too.

What We Do In The Shadows

While season 1 is great, season 2 is really where the show seems to have fully blossomed. So far this season we have plotlines involving ghosts (the vampires dont believe ghosts are real), an email forward scam (the vampires are scared about being cursed by an email chain) and then theres the latest episode where one vampire must go on the run from a rival (played by Mark Hamill) and adopts the persona of Jackie Daytona, regular human bartender serving human alcohol beers.

I am not doing it justice, but suffice to say that depending on your sense of humor, What We Do In The Shadows might actually be the funniest show on TV right now, and Im including the mountain of never-ending streaming content along with that. And I think it might even just edge out my pride and joy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, albeit the two series are extremely different.

So yes, I would concur that its time to get into this show even if you think a goofy vampire parody may not be for you. The writing and the performances are phenomenal for the genre, and youll be missing out if you dont at least give it a shot for a few episodes.

What We Do In The Shadows airs on FX weekly, but can be streamed on Hulu as well now, including the new season.
