New "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" YA books will focus on Willow’s kid being Chosen – Boing Boing

Earlier this month, Polygon revealed that Disney had announced plans for a new Buffy-spinoff series of YA novels, with the first one titled In Every Generation coming as soon as January 2022. Written by Kendare Blake, the best-selling author of the Anna Dressed in Blood books, this new Buffy series will focus on Frankie Rosenberg, who's not only struggling to follow in the witchy footsteps of her mother Willow, but also gets tapped to be a Slayer as well. Here's the official synopsis:

Frankie Rosenberg is passionate about the environment, a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School, and the daughter of the most powerful witch in Sunnydale history. Her mom, Willow, is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie's happily quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of an attack, and all the Slayersincluding Buffy, Faith, and Hailey's older sister Vimight be dead. That means it's time for this generation's Slayer to be born. But being the first ever Slayer-Witch means learning how to wield a stake while trying to control her budding powers. With the help of Hailey, a werewolf named Jake, and a hot but nerdy sage demon, Frankie must become the Slayer, prevent the Hellmouth from opening again, and find out what happened to her Aunt Buffy, before she's next. Get ready for a whole new story within the world of Buffy!

Now that Disney owns the rights to the Buffy-verse, it certainly makes sense for them to try a Star Wars sequel-trilogy approach, with the beloved characters of yore now serving as the wise old mentor-types. And the idea of a witch who's also a slayer is pretty fun. Hopefully, Disney has at least learned some better sequel planning and won't just abruptly tie up with these storylines with a half-assed "Somehow, the Master has returned!"
