The Vampire Diaries: 5 Ways Katherine Was Inconsistent (& 5 She Stayed True To Herself) – Screen Rant

Katherine Pierce was one of the best villains and characters on TVD, but did she always stay true to herself in the series?

The Vampire Diaries has been home to many great villains throughout it's eight season run, but the first and quite possibly the best villain of them all just might be Katherine Pierce.

Katherine wasn't born evil, but once her life was in imminent danger due to Klaus Mikaelson, she decided to be. And boy, was she good at it. Katherine was one of the most powerful and talented characters in the series, and she had one of the strongest personalities on the show. However, not everything about Katherine's characterization was always consistent.

It's understandable that someone would react to different people in different ways, but one of the most inconsistent aspects of Katherine Pierce as a character is how she is utterly unconcerned with some threats, and absolutely terrified of others.

She spent most of the series not giving the significant threat that the Mystic Falls gang posed another thought, but on the other hand she literally spent her entire life running in terror from Klaus.

One thing that Katherine could always be counted on to be was vain. She was gorgeous and she knew it, and no matter what situation she found herself in, she either wanted to look amazing or was lamenting the fact that she wasn't looking her best.

Katherine was a master manipulator and always knew how to get what she wanted, and she was never shy about using her looks as a tool in that tool belt of hers.

It was always hard to get a read on what Katherine was really feeling beneath whatever veneer she was presenting at the time. She seemed to have moments of emotional vulnerability, but it's hard to know whether or not they were even real, simply because she knew how to fake it so well and did fake it so often.

She could be incredibly cold towards people at one moment, and then demonstrate sincere caring or even love for them in the next moment.

Katherine is used to being the queen, so the idea that someone like Elena Gilbert (who was obviously very dull and unworthy of praise in Katherine's eyes) could be her competition absolutely enraged Katherine.

From the moment they met there was a rivalry there, and Katherine seemed to take enormous delight in torturing Elena in every manner she could conceive of, and even if she had a moment of kindness towards Elena, it was often followed up by extreme cruelty.

It's obvious that one of the most devastating moments in Katerina Petrova's human life was when her child was taken from her, and she told Nadia herself that she spent ages trying to find her. But considering that devastation, Katherine's behavior towards Nadia is downright strange.

For the most part Katherine was just rude as hell and really inconsiderate towards Nadia's feelings, but then when Nadia was going to die, Katherine was willing to die just to be with her.

One of the most difficult things for Katherine to deal with seems to be that while Stefan's feelings towards her may never have been very real, her feelings towards him were very consistent and very deep.

While she sometimes acted out very cruelly towards Stefan because she was jealous, the truth is that she seemed to always be in love with him.

On the flip side of that is Katherine's relationship with Damon. Even though Damon loved her completely and was obsessed with her for decades, Kat seemed to love and hate him in equal measure.

Once their romance was well and truly dead, he and Katherine traded barbs non-stop, however when it came down to it, it also seemed like Katherine was completely unwilling to lose him for good.

Whether Katherine was trying to be cruel or kind, she could never just be straightforward about it. Once she became a vampire, it seemed like she could never just be herself, and the only way she could even function in the world was by manipulating everyone around her at all times.

Even when she didn't really want to be manipulative, she just couldn't help herself.

Although Katherine was indisputably one of the worst villains in the history of The Vampire Diaries, it's hard not to see her as a victim of circumstance as well.

There are clear moments where Katherine is very sympathetic and even pitiable, and even at her most evil it's hard to ignore her inner humanity. And Katherine didn't know how to strike this balance either, she often wanted to be the heartless villain, but occasionally found that she couldn't be.

Katherine Pierce's greatest talent as a vampire and general baddie is obviously her ability to survive even against the most insane odds. Katherine will truly do nearly anything in order to save her own skin, and her personal motto seems to be "better you die than I".

Whether she was being her worst or best self, the one thing that could be relied on is her ability to stay alive.
