Klaus is a star vampire of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, but was he a good or bad brother?

The Vampire Diaries and The Originals Niklaus Mikaelson is a much-beloved character and a fan favorite. Despite being the antagonist in both series, Klaus won the hearts of all vampire lovers for his role as the mysterious and troubled leader of the Mikaelson family.

The brother of Freya, Finn, Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik, Klaus often felt like an outcast due to his origins as a hybrid. This often-left fans feeling bad for him as hes a character that has always been split between doing good and evil. This means that there were times he was a good brother and times he wasnt.

Despite not being liked by his parents, Niklaus was a gentle soul who cared deeply for his siblings. The audience was given insight into this in season 1 episode 16 Farewell to Storyville of The Originals. A flashback scene showed Niklaus giving his younger sister a wooden Knight, reassuring her he would protect her from the storm and always be there for her. This was one of Klauss sweetest moments as he showed how much of a good big brother he was, being there to comfort andprotect Rebekah.

In season 3 episode 8 of The Vampire Diaries, both Rebekah and the audience were made aware that Esther was killed by Niklaus and not Mikael. After years of lying to his siblings about the true cause of their mothers death, Klaus showed no remorse when admitting he had killed his own mother. Niklaus further kills Mikael (the father of his siblings) in The Originals season 2 episode Night Has a Thousand Eyes.

Although the Mikaelson parents werent the best, by killing both his parents, Niklaus left his siblings orphaned and left no option for their parents to right their wrongs. In this instance, Klaus proved to be both a reckless son and a sibling.

Marcel was Niklauss prodigy. In the past, Niklaus and Marcel shared a father-son relationship, however, this changed drastically in the season 3 finale when Elijah kills Marcel, mistakenly making him more powerful than ever. After facing backlash from the vampires of New Orleans and Marcel, Niklaus placed himself in a vulnerable position and stood trial for all his crimes. In doing so, Niklaus was able to ensure his family's safety, giving Hayley enough time to find a safe cure for Elijah and Kol who were bitten by Marcel. Placing himself on trial and being imprisoned by Marcel for 5 years allowed Klaus to be the hero, showing how far he is willing to go to ensure his siblings survive.

Niklauss introduction in The Vampire Diaries was far from positive. Always being portrayed as a villain, it could easily be said that he was dangerous and often lacked compassion. The audience often got to see Klaus dangerous side in situations where someone would cross him. If even one of his siblings crossed the line with him, Klaus would have no shame in putting his siblings to sleep for hundreds of years.

He would also dagger his siblings' time after time if he disagreed with them, leaving his relationship with Finn, Elijah, Kol, and Rebekah permanently severed. This was one of the times where Klaus was not a good brother and was instead dangerous to his siblings.

The Hollow was first introduced to The Originals in season 4. The most powerful source of magic, the Hollow was known to be a dangerous being that brings along nothing but destruction. After the Hollow possesses Hope in season 4 episode Voodoo Child, it becomes clear to the Mikaelson family that no one would now be safe. To permanently end the Hollow's existence, Niklaus sacrifices himself, taking in the Hollow. This would eventually lead him to put an end to his own life in order to ensure his family would be safe.

As previously mentioned, Klaus would not have any issue putting his siblings in line. In season 1 episode 12 of The Originals, Klaus wounds his brother Elijah by inflicting on him a werewolf bite. Being fully aware this would make his brother suffer, Klaus felt no remorse and left Elijah to revel in his suffering.

At this moment, Klaus had no love for his brother, but instead, let anger take over his emotion. This moment proved to the audience and Elijah that Niklaus was not a good brother and this moment led to a setback in their relationship as brothers.

Rebekah was arguably Klauss most treasured sibling. Always being protective of her, he often would never let Rebekah have a chance at love and happiness in fear she would abandon him. However, this changed in the series finale of The Originals as Niklaus showed he was willing to let Rebekah go and be happy. In season 5 episode 13, Klaus gives his sister the option to take the cure that would make her human. Klaus says goodbye to his beloved sister, wishing her the best. In this final goodbye, Klaus showed how much he loved Rebekah going to a great extent to let her know that she is free to live her life without his interference, showing he after all cared for her.

Niklaus Mikaelson had a great fear of being abandoned. As a result, he was often seen forbidding Rebekah and Elijah from finding love. Due to this fear, Niklaus was seen on numerous occasions killing Rebekahs and Elijahs love interests. In season 1 episode 15, the audience is granted a flashback of Niklaus killing Elijahs friend and partner Celeste. Also, after seeing Rebekahand Marcel develop a relationship, Klaus was afraid they would leave and not have time for him. As a result, Niklaus can be seen in season 1 episode 2 of the Originals daggering Rebekah to stop their love progress, hence why he was a bad brother.

Kol and Niklauss relationship was always rocky. Kol always resented Klaus for daggering him in the past, leaving their relationship on the fine lines between hate and brotherly love. The audience was aware of their negative relationship, hence why it came to a shock when Niklaus showed deep anger and sadness when his brother died at the hands of Elena and Jeremy Gilbert. In season 4 episode 12 of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus appears moments after Kols murder. Although he disliked his brother, Klaus promised to avenge Kol stating he would burn down Elena and Jeremy, hunting them to their ends. This moment approved that Niklaus did love his brother as only a good sibling would promise to avenge the death of a lost brother.

Freya Mikaelson was first introduced to The Originals in the season 2 episode Wheel Inside the Wheel. The long-lost sibling of Niklaus, Freya was known to be a powerful witch. Being introduced to her siblings at a late stage in life often led Freya to be seen as an outcast. Niklaus himself took a long time to accept her as a sibling. In the season 2 episode Save My Soul, Klaus can be seen snapping Freyas neck to see if her story is valid. Although Freya proved to be a valuable sister, Niklauss lack of trust in her showed his unwillingness to be a loving brother.
