Hruskas Kolaches

Hruska's Kolaches serves up a secret family recipe of savory and sweet kolaches made from scratch. The American Fork shop opened in February, joining the shop in Provo and Salt Lake City.

The Original Pancake House, which opened in February, offers a variety of breakfast foods. As ourfood reviewer described, the food is consistently good and reasonably priced, making it worth the crowds the often occupy the restaurant.

The Pad Thai atSomtum Thai & Lao Food in Eagle Mountain.

Somtum "deliver(s) on the promise of delicious food" and "brings some much-needed dining diversity to the great Eagle Mountain area" with its variety of Thai and Lao food, according to ourfood reviewer. The restaurant opened in March.

MOZZ Artisan Pizza, which opened in Provo in March, serves up handcrafted individual pizzas topped with locally-sourced ingredients. Give the cauliflower pizza a try, as the dish was ourfood reviewer'sfavorite.

One of the newest donut shops in Utah County is Jack's Donuts, which opened in March. They serve a variety of unique doughnuts, including some topped with different kinds of cereal.

Assorted desserts areserved at Fillings and Emulsions in Provo.

Fillings and Emulsions is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. The dessert shop opened in Provo in March expanding from their Salt Lake City location. Our food reviewer said that the new Provo patisserie both satisfied my sweet tooth and pleased all of our Fillings and Emulsions.

However, along with the sweets menu, they also have a bakery menu with savory options like the Cuban Sandwich Pie.

According to the restaurants's website, Ombu is the first Korean BBQ all-you-can-eat experience in Utah. It opened in Orem in the spring.

Twisted Sugar is a drink shop that has everything from sodas, lemonades and energy drinks, as well as smoothies, cookies and Dole Whips. They opened their first Utah County location in Saratoga Springs at the end of May.

A look inside the chicken sandwich on toasted buns topped with coleslaw and dill pickle slices at Lovebirds Hot Chicken.

Started by the people behind Waffle Love, Lovebirds is a take on Nashville hot chicken. Opening in April, the restaurant has a very simple menu. Dishes include fried chicken sandwiches on toasted, house made brioche buns, with different topping options, along with sides of slaws and fries.

Padeli's opened in Lehi in May and offers a variety of gyros, bowls and wraps.

According to ourfood reviewer, Blue Poblano offers Provo the fancy tacos it never knew it needed. She describes each bite as high quality and the overall presentation restaurant-quality.

Years ago, the establishment was housed in downtown Provo, then moved locations up to Salt Lake, and then closed that location to move back to this new spot in Provo this year.

Swamp City Eats opened in May inside Platinum Sports and Music Memorabilia. The menu includes a few fun treats, including Swamp Tacos, Nachos, Pretzel Bites, Cucumber Hummus Boats, Quesadillas and Fruit Kabobs.

If you've ever wished snowflakes were just a bit more flavorful, you simply must try the shaved snow desserts at the Vampire Penguin in American Fork.

Youve probably had shaved ice, but probably not like you can get at Vampire Penguin. As our food reviewer described, Think colorful snowballs topped with marshmallows and sprinkles and fruit and syrups. Think shaved ice, but with ice cream flavors and the smooth consistency of snow.

Vampire Penguin opened in American Fork in June.

According to our food reviewer, "Haku Ramen is a few-frills kind of eatery that I find myself particularly attracted to. Ive opined in previous reviews that I make it a point to find restaurants that dedicate their menus to a few items. Haku Ramen House pulls this off effortlessly, serving four kinds of ramen with a handful of appetizers." It opened in June.

For fine Italian dining in Utah County, you can head to Salt, which opened in June in Provo. Our food reviewer said, Amazing bruschetta, perfectly cooked steak and a to-die-for cheesecake? Yep, well definitely be coming back to Salt.

For real ice cream in fun flavors, Brusters opened in Provo in July. They serve ice cream, frozen yogurt, ice, sherbert and sorbet in a variety of flavors.

The Maple Mountain Bar and Grill serves a lunch and dinner menu for those 21 and up. The restaurant opened in Spanish Fork in June. The menu includes more than typical bar food with burgers, wings, salads, tacos, steaks, pork chop and an array of appetizers including fried pickles and calamari.

Adding to Utah Countys love of kolaches, Kolache Krave opened in September in Pleasant Grove. They serve both sweet and savory kolaches in unique flavors.

The Japanese style ramen noodle restaurant opened its first Utah County location in Orem in November and a second location opened Christmas Eve in American Fork.

Locations: 206 E. University Parkway, Orem; 466 N. 900 West, American Fork

Formerly known as Rocky Mountain Drive Inn, JJ Burger opened on Dec. 16. The menu includes burgers, sandwiches, seafood, scones and ice cream.
