Legacies boss says key shift from The Vampire Diaries is shown through Sebastian – digitalspy.com

Many of the mysteries of Thomas Doherty's Legacies characters are yet to be solved, but the show's co-writer has now revealed a key part of Sebastian's purpose and how it relates the spin-off to its predecessor The Vampire Diaries.

As season two of the drama continues, co-writer Brett Matthews has been discussing Sebastian's arc, revealing how the "old-world" vampire represents a tonal "shift" that fans will have noticed between The Vampire Diaries and Legacies.

Teasing Sebastian's "grudge against the modern world", Matthews told TVLine: "The fun of this character is that he's a vampire that's kind of from the old show; Sebastian and Damon Salvatore would have had beers and been totally cool.

"The world has changed so much, in many ways for the better, but it's also gotten worse in other ways. He's sort of a character from The Vampire Diaries, but the world has shifted under his feet."

Distancing Legacies from its sister show, Matthews added that "what it means to be a vampire on this show is not what it used to mean in The Vampire Diaries", insisting that Legacies is not about to become "a gothic romance".

He continued: "Sebastian is ripped from that world, so his frustrations lie in the modern world. That's something we'll dive into. You'll learn a lot about Sebastian, including where he comes from and why he feels the way he does about the world."

Legacies' callbacks to The Vampire Diaries aren't going anywhere, however, with showrunner Julie Plec recently confirming that fan-favourite Chris Wood will soon be returning to Mystic Falls as Kai Parker.

And he's not the only iconic character to get a comeback of sorts...

Legacies airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW in the US.
