The Weeknd’s watch collection is just as unconventional as you’d expect – British GQ

When The Weeknd sings, I cant feel my face when Im with you, but I love it, he is, alas, not talking about the dial of a beautiful watch. However, the singer, whose delicate falsetto glides effortlessly over unsettling yet catchy songs about drugs, alienation, heartbreak and casual sex, has been spotted wearing watches as interesting and unusual as his music.

The Weeknd often plays around with his image to macabre effect. For his performance of Save Your Tears at the 2020 American Music Awards, The Weeknd appeared in a sparkly red jacket by Givenchy, accessorised with a face full of plastic surgery bandages and a gold Rolex Datejust ref 16018 with black onyx dial on the wrist. While the Rolex Datejust was originally released in 1945 to celebrate the brands 40th anniversary, its the watch's reputation as an 1980s status symbol that The Weeknd channels here. Lets not forget that the Rolex Datejust was mentioned 26 times by Patrick Bateman in American Psycho and its this kind of weirdly obsessive, dissolute glamour that The Weeknd revels in.

The black dial makes his Datejust just a touch sinister but in a louche and sexy way, like the kind of watch a Bond villain might wear. Speaking of which, The Weeknd has also been spotted in a King Midas from Rolexs Cellini line, in a publicity photo for his album After Hours. Designed by Grald Genta, its the same model that Christopher Lee wore when playing the Bond villain Francisco Scaramanga in The Man With The Golden Gun.

More recently, The Weeknd took to Instagram to show off his Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. In addition to being a childhood fan of the Marvel franchise, The Weeknd also contributed the song Pray For Me to the movies soundtrack. The watchs most striking feature is an imposing Black Panther figure lunging out over the hour and minute hands, just above the tourbillon. Made out of white gold, the figure has been intricately laser carved and hand painted to reveal alternately matte and mirror surfaces. Beneath this astonishing dial, the watch is powered by the Calibre 2965, a hand-wound mechanism with flying tourbillon and comes with 72 hours of power reserve. The 42mm case features the iconic octagonal bezel of the Royal Oak franchise, while the purple rubber strap is another reference to the Black Panther franchise. Wakanda Forever!
