Why liking a picture of his son on Facebook landed dad in the cells – Grimsby Live

A woman felt she was being watched and psychologically controlled after her ex-boyfriend defied a court and liked Facebook posts she made - including one that was a picture of his son.

He was banned from contacting her even on social media but the very next day, he did a heart emoji on a picture of his son and "liked" another of her posts, a court heard.

Christopher Baumber, 24, of Duke Street, Grimsby, admitted breaching a domestic violence protection order on April 18.

Jayne Parker, prosecuting for the police told Grimsby Magistrates' Court that the original order was made for the woman's protection on April 17 after allegations of assault, including punching her, causing her to stumble, as well as going to her home.

It specifically banned any contact whatsoever, including via social media, but he "liked" Facebook posts by her, which was a breach of the order.

They made her feel that he was watching her but in a different way and was psychologically controlling her.

"He has no reason to do this because he knows full well that the condition is in place," said Ms Parker.

Baumber later said: "It's stupid, isnt it? It's about liking something on Facebook."

Vicky Lee, mitigating, said thatBaumber put a heart emoji on a post by his ex-girlfriend of his son.

It came to his attention because she had tagged his mother in the picture and he became aware of it.

He also "liked" another post by hisex-girlfriend that contained a memory for him.

He claimed that he did not realise that this constituted a breach of the court order.

"No communication means any type of communication, which includes social media," said Miss Lee.

Baumber, a self-employed roofer, had not been able to work recently because of the coronavirus outbreak. He had been in the cells for a day.

District judge Daniel Curtis said that the breach was at the lower end of the scale and there was no suggestion thatBaumber had been round to the house or made threats or used violence against the woman.

Baumber had not commented on the Facebook posts and had merely reacted to them.

"If it happens again, there is every chance that I will send you to custody," said Mr Curtis.

Baumber replied: "That won't be happening."

He was fined 100 and was ordered to pay 65 costs.
