The Walking Dead has outlived itself; despite dying ratings, the AMC show with a serious cult following isnt quite dead yet. Season 10 premiered in October, and after a Winter hiatus, the second half of this wild season is about to return in 2020. Find out when the midseason premiere is and what has happened so far this season.
After a rocky 9th season, ratings wise, season 10 premiered Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019. The midseason premiere is Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. ET. There will be eight episodes in the second half of the season until its finale. We will be saying goodbye toMichonne (Danai Gurira) in the second half of the season.
The network released a short trailer for rest of season 10.
Well, the shows original leading man Andrew Lincoln sure isnt. The actor, who played Rick Grimes, left the series due tohis growing family, and his desire to spend more time with his children. I started thinking about it when the children got older and became less portable, he said. Apparently, he will be headlining a series of Walking Dead movies, however.
While it seems like characters die off left and right on this series, there are some who are alive and kicking. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be back as Negan and Norman Reedus will also return as Daryl Dixon. People expect him to fill the hole Lincoln left gaping.
Other characters who are still alive include Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), Lydia (Cassady McClincy), Magna (Nadia Hilker), Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura), Luke (Dan Fogler), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Kelly (Angel Theory), Alden (Callan McAuliffe), Siddiq (Avi Nash), King Ezekiel (Khary Payton), Father Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam), Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Judith Grimes.
We can also expect Ryan Hurst to come back as Beta and Samantha Morton to be back as Alpha. In season 10, [showrunner] Angela [Kang] and I have been rapping about exploring more of their relationship and getting some answers, Hurst said at Walker Stalker Con London, according to ComicBook.com. And also starting to see if and when theres sort of going to be a divergence between the two. Thats about as much as I can tell you.
You will get to see Danai Gurira again as Michonne. But prepared to say your goodbyes. Shes featured in the first-look images from the upcoming season, butHollywood Reporter previously reported that she will only appear in a handful of episodes that will be interspersed throughout. And at Comic Con, Gurira revealed that this will be her last season. Id just like to say that this has been one of the purest joys of my life to play this role, and to be amongst these people, and those that are not here right now, and amongst all of you, she continued. I am very, very thankful for the experience Ive had in ways I cant express right now. I will say that my heart does not leave in any way, shape or form. The beauty of this show is thatTWDFamily is forever.
There will be new blood. Comic book character Dante, played by Juan Javier Cardenas, will be introduced. Leftoversstar Kevin Carroll has alsojoined as Virgil, a survivor who comes across Daryls group duringtheir war against The Whisperers and Thora Birch (American Beauty) isjoining The Whisperersas Alphasloyal lieutenant Gamma, Digital Spy reports.

Well, a lot of people died, for starters. Jesus (Tom Payne), Enid (Katelyn Nacon), Tara (Alanna Masterson), Henry (Matt Lintz), Tammy Rose (Brett Butler), Arat (Elizabeth Ludlow) and Gregory (Xander Berkeley) were all killed off.
The Walking Dead season 9picks up after Negans defeat, with The Saviors struggling to adapt to life post-Negan. Hilltops former leader, Gregory, who bowed to Negans demands in the past, tries and fails to assassinate new leader Maggie (who is now a mother to baby Hershel), so she executes him. Some of the Saviors clash with Ricks group and a handful are even taken by the Oceanside, which leads to a full-scale revolt.
The overall theme of season 9 was the battle to achieve Carls dream of rebuilding civilization between the various communities. There were time-jumpsthe first was 18 months, then six years. In that time, the community leaders fell out for unknown reasons, and Sanctuary and The Kingdom fell apart, perhaps forever. It seems Hilltop and Alexandria might be the only ones remaining.
Oh, and, The Whisperers, led by Alpha, were introduced.
In the season finale, Alpha, Beta and their minions let out a war cry with a killing spree in the Alexandria Safe-Zone and used their severed heads to establish a border wall between the feral and civilized communities. Things are getting ugly. Literally and figuratively.
Well, he didnt. Thats how the movies are happening. In season 9, episode 5, he does go out with a bang, though, and it was the biggest bang of the season. Attempting to lead a large herd of Walkers away from his people during the revolt, Rick Grimes is thrown from his horse and seriously injured. He sacrifices himself to save Alexandria by blowing up the bridge they were building and stopping the Walkers from crossing it, an event witnessed by Michonne, Daryl and the others. However, Rick doesnt die, hes rescued by Anne/Jadis who radios her helicopter contacts, she and Rick are taken away by helicopter and not seen again.
Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan, left The Walking Dead in the same episode. After Ricks apparent death, a six-year time jump takes place and, in the interim, laden with guilt about Ricks death, Maggie leaves Hilltop to join Georgies group.
However, it is likely she will return in season 10Kang has left the door open. Earlier this summer, Kang revealed to EW that theyre working on her return.
Hes in jail. After Rick departs, Judith lets him leave his cell in Alexandria, even though she says theres nothing out there for him. At the end of season 9, we saw a seriously injured Negan trudge through a major snowstorm with an injured Judith slung over his shoulder as if he were his savior. Upon their return home, he was shoved back into a cell.
Daryl has become the leader of the Sanctuary, which hes not totally into. He and Rick butt heads a bit in season 9 because Daryl is eager to help Maggie, who wants to kill Negan, contrary to Ricks belief that he should be imprisoned. Later, Daryl tries to prevent Rick from stopping Maggie. They have a brief fight, but in the end, they reconcile, but this is when the riot starts and the two men split up, and Daryl thinks Rick died. After a six-year time jump, everything has changed and Daryl now lives alone with a dog.
Also, after an intense fight, theres some unfinished business between Daryl and Beta.
They are living people wearing the skins of Walkers as disguises as they travel in groups. Gross, right?
They kill Jesus. And after her daughter, Lydia, is taken in by the Hilltop, Alpha strikes back at the fair, which was originally designed to reconnect the Kingdom, Hilltop and Alexandria. The Whisperers kill severalincluding Carol and Ezekiels adoptive son Henry, Tara and Enidand the Kingdom falls.

There are some problems to be worked out with the Whisperers, these crazy neighbors that come in and out and cause chaos in their world, Kang toldEntertainment Weeklyof season 10. Thats something to play out, and obviously there will be other storylines that are kind of intersecting with all of this. Its always fun to have more than one thing going on at once.
Kang also teased a minor time jump. Things are going to pick up with a little bit more of a time passage, not a giant one like weve had, but winter will be over and people will be going to be in a different emotional space, she said. And Kang is stepping out of bounds. Theres other stuff in [the season ten premiere] where Im like, I must be psychotic, because lets just do more stuff weve never done on this show that feels impossible. Thats part of the fun of the show.
AMC has also released a synopsis for season 10.
When Episode 1 ofTWDSeason 10 premieres, it is now Spring, a few months after the end of season 9, when our group of survivors dared to cross into Whisperer territory during the harsh winter, the network revealed earlier this summer. The collected communities, led byDaryl, Michonne andCarol are still dealing with the effects ofAlphashorrific display of power, reluctantly respecting the new borderlines being imposed on them, all while organizing themselves into a militia-style fighting force, preparing for a battle that may be unavoidable.
AMC describes The Whisperers as a threat unlike anythey have ever faced. Backed by a massive horde of the dead, a conflict with the Whisperers is seemingly a fight the survivors cannot win. The question of what to do, and the fear it breeds, will infect the communities and give rise to paranoia, propaganda, secret agendas, and infighting that will test them as both individuals and as a society.
Also, after Negan earned some trust in season 9, Kang tells EW hes given some freedom in the new season. So, when we start off this year, well see that hes almost a part of the future that is kind of like what Carl had envisioned. She adds,Hes doing work, but it is still as a prisoner. Its more like hes on work-release.
To send a character off the show, and [decide] how we wanted to do that I know Angela [Kang] and the writers spent a lot of time discussing it in the build-up to this season, producer Denise Huth told Radio Times of Michonnes exit. It is tricky. Its a very difficult thing to do. Michonnes exit seems to have a twist. I think its going to be greatI think it will ultimately be very satisfying and also raise a whole bunch of other questions, she said.
On the writing side, we take the responsibility very serious. Its important to the fans and to us, Kang said at Comic Con. When we worked on the exit for Andy, we took it just as seriously. We want to do right by this incredible actress and this story. I hope we havent screwed it up. We put her through her paces this year. Shes a spectacular actress. She brought her A++ game, as she always does. Im very excited to share what shes doing.
But before she leaves, we will see more of her and Ezekiels romance. They like each other. [And their relationship] feeds into the journeys theyre on this season, Kang told TVLine.
Hopefully! According to the Daily News, things heat up for the two of them in the season premiere, when they spend some quality time together after time apart. You will see a different dynamic from Carol and Daryl for sure this year, Reedus tells the Daily News. Its complicated. There are a lot of things going on that make those characters go in certain directions. You will get to see how close they are and youll also get to see those characters interact in different ways as well.
The Walking Deads executive producer Greg Nicotero has teased Carols vengeance in the upcoming season. Knowing Carols history, I think [a smackdown is] pretty likely, she really doesnt take things lying down, Nicotero told TVLine. Shes definitely got a vendetta. And considering Alpha killed her son Henry, we have a feeling, Alpha will be on the receiving end of this smackdown.

The Alexandrians and the Whisperers have spent the months since the massacre avoiding each other. The Whisperers havent been seen in quite some time, and things are pretty peaceful. Unfortunately, that doesnt last long; the paranoia sets in when Judithfinds a Whisperer mask washed up on the beach. They realize it could be nothing, but no one is convinced.Aaron, for one, interprets the mask as a threat, but Michonne disagrees and urges him to stay calm so as to not scare everyone. Negan finds out about it but decides to lay low, since hes still seen as an outsider.
Daryl and Carol spend some time together tracking a deer and avoiding walkers. Then he calls her his best friend! Cue the coos. A serious convo ensues. You ever wonder if this is all there is? Carol asks. Just run into people, kill each other, until whoevers left says enough? Daryl responds, Sometimes I think were just surviving one fight to the next. He notes that he understands why Maggie went with Georgie.
Then a Soviet satellite falls out of the sky and crashes down on The Whisperers side of the border, setting the woods on fire. Daryl and Carol kindly risk crossing over to put out the fire. This act of goodwill could earn them bonus points with Alpha, or may provoke her. The Whisperer leaders stare-down with Carol across the canyon that ends the episode seems to indicate this will not be the case, though.
Finally, what everyones been waiting for, a flashback reveals the origins of Alpha and Beta. Alpha attempts to toughen up Lydia as they prepare to walk with the dead. Meanwhile, the Whisperers create their herds.
Paranoia sweeps over Alexandria as everyone fears the Whisperers return and what could happen. In the meantime, Carol battles with the need for revenge.
Paranoia still lurks as Alexandrians get riled up over the Whisperers. Unfortunately for Negan, they take our their fears on him. Back at Hilltop, the group deals with an unexpected safety issue.
Supplies have gone missing from from Hilltop. Kelly, who is suffering from hearing loss, gets separated from her hunting party, and when she is found, she is near a stash of supplies that she and Magna have been taking from Hilltop, as they do not yet fully trust the community. Daryl agrees to cover for them, though. Negan is being idolized by an Alexandrian named Brandon, the son of a former Savior also living in Alexandria.Siddiqdiscovers that Ezekiel has thyroid cancer, and does not know how long hell live.
Slightly.
We have followed the blueprint but things are so different between the show and the comic now that, despite not having that set path to follow, I have no doubt that Angela [Kang] and the writers can continue to tell these characters stories for a long time to come, just based on the incredible foundation that Robert left us,Huthtold Games Radar after the comic book abruptly ended earlier this year. I loved how [creator Robert Kirkman] wrapped it up and left those characters where they were, and I think it opens up a lot of possibilities for us. I know a lot of fans are worried that with the comic book ending, that means were ending. I dont think thats necessarily the case.
Dango Nguyen, a former firefighter and actor who appeared on The Walking Dead, died in August 2019 after a hard-fought battle with cancer, according to Georgias Athens-Clarke County Fire department.
Nguyen appeared in several episodes of the third season as a guard for the town of Woodbury who worked for The Governor, a villain who frequently fought with Grimes.

Its unclear how many episodes will be in season 10 and how many more seasons lie ahead. We know by now that this show always surprises, considering some werent sure it would survive past season 9, yet here we are.
Former showrunner Scott M. Gimple had lofty goals for the show. We are trying to do 20 years, Gimplesaidduring a fan panel at PaleyFest in 2017. The [Walking Dead] comic has certainly done it, and I look forward to every issue. The Simpsons has been on 26, 27 years, so thats a challengeso OK, challenge accepted. Done.
The premiere airs Sunday, Oct. 6 on AMC, but if you sign up for AMC Premiere, you can watch it now.
The extended premiere will air at 9 p.m. ET. You can also stream episodes after theyve aired on the AMC app.
Typically, AMC Premiere also lets you stream new episodes 48 hours before they air.
