WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Kingdom, streaming now on Netflix.
Netflix's Kingdom has the drama of The Walking Dead, the political twists of Game of Thrones and with its zombies, the breakneck pace of World War Z. However, while Season 1 revealed the Resurrection Plant in the cold regions of Korea was the source of the outbreak, the series never revealed its true origin and exactly when and where it started infecting locals.
However, Season 2 sheds light onthe truth and its one which definitely sees the Koreans having no one to blame but themselves, revealing it's all down to greed and that lust for power in feudal times that doomed the nation.

In the finale of the six-episode season, fans discover that Lee Chang has been moving through Korea after the series makes a seven-year jump. Along with Seo-Bi, his medical head, they've been researching, testing and documenting the plant Seo-Bi's mentor first introduced last season. This leads todetails froma journal she leaves for the Joseon court coming out into the open for the new king who succeeded Chang. Apparently, the plant was seeded through the country by farmers who wanted to sell and make money. The twist is they were sold the seeds by sinister Chinese operatives, led by the Pirate Queen.
They wanted to destabilize the country and the innocent farmers were planning to sell it to superstitious Koreans to bring their families back from the dead. When people didn't buy, because they were too scared or didn't believe, these farmers planted them in the hillside, threw them into the wild to grow or gave them away, and that's how the plant spread like wildfire. The farmers were uneducated and couldn't grasp the severity of the situation and how these seeds were ticking time bombs. It leaves Chang wondering if people have been cooking with the plants and if animals at some point will turn intothe undead too.

It's also revealed that Cho, leader of the royal guard and the man who got Chang banished from the throne, worked with Seo-Bi's mentor to use the plants to create zombie soldiers for the army. Korea was losing the war against the Japanese at that time and to top the scales during the feudal era, Cho had the plant used on sick people in barracks as he felt this was a mercy killing while offering them a chance at duty. Unfortunately, they didn't know as they thought they were being treated with medicine, but really, this secret cabal was weaponizing them.
Cho's movewon the war but remnant zombies would roam the countryside, infecting victims, and this is how one infected body ended up being cooked by poor villagers in Season 1. Cho's regime suffered them money and food, so they turned into cannibals, not knowing they were eating zombie-poisoned bodies. Thus, Cho's wicked ways hurt the Koreans on two fronts as he shot the plant into his people's bloodstreams fighting Japan, and then left the virus out there unchecked so it could propagate in the wild. Unknowingly, he was doing China's work and destroying the nation thanks to this epidemic and now, Season 3 will have to focus on Lee Chang trying to undo the terror by finding a way to kill the plants, removing the infected from society and taking down the Pirate Queen and Chinese operatives with a vendetta against his Citadel.
Kingdom stars Ju Ji-hoon, Ryu Seung-ryong and Bae Doo-na. Season 2 is now streamingon Netflix.

I'm a former Chemical Engineer. It was boring so I decided to write about things I love. On the geek side of things, I write about comics, cartoons, video games, television, movies and basically, all things nerdy. I also write about music in terms of punk, indie, hardcore and emo because well, they rock! If you're bored by now, then you also don't want to hear that I write for ESPN on the PR side of things. And yes, I've written sports for them too! Not bad for someone from the Caribbean, eh? To top all this off, I've scribed short films and documentaries, conceptualizing stories and scripts from a human interest and social justice perspective. Business-wise, I make big cheddar (not really) as a copywriter and digital strategist working with some of the top brands in the Latin America region. In closing, let me remind you that the geek shall inherit the Earth. Oh, FYI, I'd love to write the Gargoyles movie for Disney. YOLO.
