Hudson Confidential: ‘Zombie’ utility poles outlawed in Cornwall-on-Hudson – Times Herald-Record

Add the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson to the list of communities that have outlawed so-called zombie utility poles.

The term refers to utility poles that are old and worn-out but remain standing after electrical, telephone and other services have been transferred to a new pole.

Village officials considered the step necessary to protect public safety, as such poles often are damaged or structurally unsound.

The Village Board of Trustees postponed a vote in March after Central Hudson asked to discuss some of the laws requirements with village officials.

They adopted the local law last week.

Joseph McKay, the villages consulting attorney, said the discussions with Central Hudson did not result in any significant changes to the law. Most of the changes were technical in nature, he said.

Tourism continues to growin Ulster County

Ulster County officials, including County Executive Mike Hein and Tourism Director Rick Remsnyder, announced the launch of the countys new marketing campaign earlier this month.

This comes as the county recorded an increase in tourism spending for the seventh consecutive year in 2016.

To help continue that tourism growth, the county is launching a new marketing campaign entitled Seek For Yourself.

The campaign will encourage visitors to seek out and create their own experience in Ulster County by highlighting not only the countys marquee assets but also its more hidden treasures.

And it hopes to appeal to all visitors, whether their tastes run to adventure, culinary attractions, relaxation, history or a combination of all of them.

Our tourism is vital to our local economy, so it is important to continue attracting visitors, Hein said.
