A Major Avengers Villain Spared A Child For The Most Twisted Reason – Screen Rant

In Marvel Zombies: Halloween, the demon Mephisto reveals he's both the hero and the villain by explaining why he saved Kitty Pryde's child Peter.

What does a demon do when there are no more souls to buy or corrupt in a world of Marvel Zombies? When you're Mephisto, you learn to protect the cans in the back, which is exactly what the infamous Marvel villain did in Marvel Zombies: Halloween. The demonic entity used Devil's Night and the upcoming Halloween as a reason to protect a version of Kitty Pryde and her son Peter from hungry super-zombies, but only so he could get to their souls later.

Since 1968, the infernal Mephisto has constantly appeared in Marvel Comics stories, appearing alongside cosmic madmen or attempting to strike deals with a wide array of Marvel superheroes. Some of his notable schemes have been creating the first Ghost Rider, contributing to Scarlet Witch's descent into madness, and agreeing to save May Parker's life in exchange for removing all knowledge ofSpider-Man's marriage to Mary Jane Watsonfrom the world. Mephistohas been the villain to manybut has no problem aligning with or assisting other heroes, especially if he feels his position or power is being threatened.

In Marvel Zombies: Halloween by Fred Van Lete and Alessandro Vitti, a stand-alone Marvel Zombies tale shows the widowed Kitty Pryde and her son Peter living in an abandoned house whose grounds are littered with booby traps and the corpses of curious zombies. When her son discovers about Halloween and its traditions, his mother can't resist finding him a costume and even going out to scrounge up some candy. Peter ignores his mother's warning to stay put when he learns his new pet Blackie has ventured outside, searching for him among the landscape of corpses and abandoned civilization.Warned by a mysterious old man that he's ventured out on Devil's Night instead of Halloween, Peter is reminded of the real horrors outside when he is apprehended by teenage Marvel zombies, some hailing fromthe Power Pack, Runaways, and Avengers Academy.

When the zombies' lunch is interrupted by Kitty Pryde apprehending her child, Kitty and Peter soon find themselves trapped inside the nearby high school, where Kitty's plea to sacrifice herself if they let Peter go falls on hungry, deaf ears. Fortunately, the clock strikes midnight and the mysterious old man from before appears, commenting on how the youngsters don't appreciate the old traditions before conjuring fire to burn them alive. The old man reveals himself to be the demonic Mephisto, but Kitty knows that the only reason he saved them was to claim Peter's soul. He laughs at Kitty's declaration that he won't claim him, stating he's claimed countless souls despite mothers who've made similar promises in the past.

Mephisto is not above pretending to do some good, although any "heroic" effort is only for his own benefit and not due to any sense of righteousness. In the world of Marvel Zombies, where there are so few desperate souls that he could bargain with, heis both the hero and the villain. Although a tearful Peter later tells his mother he's afraid of being taken by Mephisto, she reminds him that it's still his choice and that she believes her influence along with the memory of his fatheris strong enough to inspire him to say no. Mephisto was inspired by the demon Mephistopheles from the classic Faust legend, so he's always ready to make a deal, even if the terms aren't exactly in your favor. We've yet to return to this corner of the Marvel Zombies universe but one can only hope little Peter Pryde-Rasputin grew up strong enough to refuse Mephisto's twisted offers, should they ever meet again.
