The walking dead are the latest victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cool Spring Downtown District and Back-a-Round Records announced Monday that the popular Zombie Walk and Prom has been canceled for this year. The district also said downtown trick-or-treating will not be scheduled this year.

For the past several years, the walk has attracted hundreds of Halloween revelers to downtown Fayetteville. Participants would get made up as zombies and walk or, rather, lurch down Hay Street to Market Square.

There, a concert would be featured. Many of the "zombies" would then attend a "prom" held at an area club.

In a news release, Cool Spring Downtown District said it has canceled the Zombie Walk as well as downtown trick-or-treating because of safety concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 40 downtown businesses handed out candy last year, the district said.
