Marvel’s Deadliest Version of Punisher Joins The Zombie Apocalypse – Screen Rant

The Punisher is already a pretty remorseless killer but when he is stripped of even more of his humanity - literally - the results could get scary.

The Punisher got an upgrade in Marvel Zombies Resurrection #2 that made him somehow even deadlier than ever. Frank Castle has struggled with maintaining any humanity while he murders his way throughcountless baddies to gain vengeance for the death of his family. But this zombie apocalypse version of The Punisher gave up that pesky humanity all together.

In this reinvented zombified version of the Marvel universe, a hive of undead living in Galactus corpse were floating through space and crash landed onto Earth. The undead infected every superhero they could and devoured everything else. Only a few heroes remain, and Spider-Man is trying to get them to salvation and/or find a cure to the zombie virus.

Frank Castle doesnt need any of that hopeful stuff. Hes adaptable. Castle joined a small contingent of heroes who voluntarily rid themselves of any vestige of humanity in order to not be eaten by zombies. They became androids via the transmode virus and replaced all their organic bits (that are deemed a zombie delicacy) with machine bits and are holed up in Ennow. Without having to worry about any kind of regrets or code of honor (even if that code allowed for homicide) Castle is now more deadly than ever. The Punisher always had a tenuous grasp with morality, solving almost every problem he would come across with a hail of bullets.

Forgoing any humanity at all makes Punisher all the more deadly. Castle tells Spider-Man that most of the people left over voluntarily turned machine. But the risk of an organic getting infected meant the machine collective made the choice for the remaining humans to be turned to machines. Blade, who came along on this zombie-killing adventure because undead slaying is his specialty, points out the flaw in Castles logic pretty succinctly. Give up your humanity so you dont lose your humanity, creative. Moron.

Writer Philip Kennedy and artist Johnson Leonard Kirk spent little time in the machine collective before introducing a cadre of different-colored zombie hulks to smash apart the machines. The Punisher may have been better off without any conscience at all in his robot brain. But that doesn't mean his head is safe from outside threats, like a Hulk fist. The Punisher is split in half in this issue before he could put the protagonists through the same transmode virus treatment.
