5 Surprisingly Realistic Zombie Movies (& 5 That Are Way Over The Top) – Screen Rant

Some zombie movies can make their situations seem surprisingly realistic while others are too over the top to be taken seriously. Here are 5 of each.

The subgenre of zombies within horror movies has pretty much been a trend since the umbrella genre began. With all of the countless movies, shows, books, and games about zombies, the line between realistic and totally ridiculous has been blurred a number of times.

Obviously, zombies as a concept aren't realistic, no matter how in-depth your zombie apocalypse plan is, but there definitely is a way to make the viral outbreak closer to reality than fiction. And with the recent Coronavirus outbreak, it seems like a zombie horror movie would do best when analyzing the people's reaction to the outbreak, rather than the outbreak itself.

#Alive is a 2020 South Korean zombie movie about a game streamer who wakes up one morning, assuming everything is like normal, only to discover the zombie apocalypse has plagued Seoul overnight.

This zombie movie is pretty horrifying, as it follows this main character who hides out in his apartment through the first month of the virus. It shows the character's struggle with his quantity of food and water, and what a zombie apocalypse in a big city would look like. This movie is pretty intense and definitely feels like one of the most realistic zombie movies out there.

If "over the top zombie movie" was defined in the dictionary, a picture of the Resident Evil movies would be right next to it. The zombies in this film franchise are less "zombie" than they are "bio-engineered killing machines."

The movies get more and more over the top as they progress with the leading character, Alice, being a zombie-killing, psionic, battle machine. The zombies also get increasingly over the top as well, as they go from regular human-turned-zombies after death, to giant creatures with psychic powers and hulking strength.

Another critically acclaimed South Korean horror movie, Train to Busan made massive waves in the horror community across the world as it became one of the greatest zombie movies ever. This film follows a father and daughter duo who race to Busan in order to reunite with the daughter's mother during the initial outbreak of the zombie virus.

The movie follows the characters as they board a train, meeting new characters along the way who fight for survival. All of the characters meet obstacles regarding the zombies and each other as the number of infected only grows. This movie is also incredibly emotional and a total tear-jerker.
