‘Army of the Dead’: Zack Snyder Teases "Insane Zombie Mayhem in His Horror Movie Return – Bloody Disgusting

Zack Snyder, who was first introduced to horror fans through his excellent James Gunn-pennedDawn of the Dead remake, is returning to the zombie subgenre with his long-gestating Army of the Deadfor Netflix.

The adventure is set amid a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Production kicked off last summer with Dave Bautistasharing this photoof the entire cast on set, which includesElla Purnell,Ana De La Reguera,Theo Rossi, Huma QureshiandGarret Dillahunt.

There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one, Snyder previously told THR. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware but not in a wink-to-the-camera way balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen.

In a more recent interview, Snyder adds to the hype by promising insane zombie mayhem and noting that the zombies were created using practical effects.

90% of our zombies are practical, Snyder says in the below 3-hour long video, transcribed by Slashfilm: The sort of zombie war, the action sequences and the fighting; my longtime collaborator and friend Damon Caro worked hard to create some insane zombie mayhem on an epic level, with a little splash of Vegas, just to make it cool.

He continues by speaking to the films tone, which is to lovingly have fun with the genre: Im obsessed with the kind of tone where I would say this the movie has fun, but it doesnt make fun, which is a really fine line. I really wanted to make a no-holds-barred zombie genre insanity. My cohorts over at Netflix really strapped in and went for a ride with mewe nerded out hardcore on our genre tropes, and you will see the tropiest tropification of tropes in the history of troping.

Being that Snyder directed one of the best zombie films ever in the surprising remake of Dawn of the Dead, I think hes earned the right to playfully fuck with the genre that hes already once slain.

Watch for a release date in 2021.
