I Walked With A Zombie Is A Zombie Remake Of Jane Eyre – Screen Rant

I Walked With A Zombie is an atmospheric 1943 chiller from director Jacques Tourneur which loosely adapts literally classic Jane Eyre.

I Walked With A Zombie is a classic chiller that's basically a zombie take on Jane Eyre. George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead came to define the modern-day zombie, with the film's mindless, flesh-eating hordes haunting the nightmares of moviegoers for years after its debut. Romero would go on to make five sequels, including 1978's Dawn Of The Dead, with other defining zombie tales include the Resident Evil series, The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later.

Prior to Night Of The Living Dead, zombies usually referred to the undead being brought back to life via voodoo. White Zombie from 1932 is considered the first true zombie film and starred Bela Lugosi (Dracula) as a Haitian voodoo master making slaves by turning them into zombies. Romero's reinvention of the creatures became the defining version following 1968's Night, but the voodoo variety occasionally return, such as the 1988 Wes Craven movie The Serpent And The Rainbow or Tales from the Crypt Presents: Ritual.

The latter movie was also inspired by 1943's I Walk With A Zombie, which is regarded as a gemof its era. The movie was loosely based on a magazine article, but the film version was - oddly enough -based onCharlotte Bront'sJane Eyre. The story involves a nurse named Betsy moving to a Caribbean island to care for Jessica, the wife of a sugar plantation owner named Paul. Jessica seems to be in the grip of some kind of zombie-like trace and Betsy falls for her employer while uncovering what happened to Jessica, which involves infidelity and a voodoo curse.

I Walked With A Zombie is an atmospheric, creepy tale from Jacques Tourneur, the director of 1942'sCat People and Night Of The Demon. The central romance itself isn't terribly captivating or sizzling, but like Tourneur's best work, it's rich in a creeping sense of dread. The film's use of light and shadow is still incredibly effective and while it probably wouldn't do much to terrify modern viewers, I Walked With A Zombie still has some startling images, especially during the sequence where Betsy takes a nighttime walk through a cane field.

A remake of I Walked With A Zombie was once in the works with Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight) and Liv Tyler linked to the main roles, but that project appears to have stalled. For fans of Tourneur's other work, I Walked With A Zombie is a must-see.

Its pronounced Paw-rick, not Pad-raig. Now thats out of the way, a brief introduction. Padraig has been writing about film online since 2012, when a friend asked if hed like to contribute the occasional review or feature to their site.A part-time hobby soon blossomed into a career when he discovered he really loved writing about movies, TV and video games he even (arguably) had a little bit of talent for it. He has written words for Den of Geek, Collider, The Irish Times and Screen Rant over the years, and can discuss anything from the MCU - where Hawkeye is clearly the best character - to the most obscure cult b-movie gem, and his hot takes often require heat resistant gloves to handle. He's super modern too, so his favorite movies include Jaws, Die Hard, The Thing, Ghostbusters and Batman. He can be found as i_Padds on Twitter making bad puns.
