Silk City Chorus annual show carries zombie theme – Journal Inquirer

MANCHESTER Its not The Walking Dead, its The Singing Dead when the Silk City Chorus holds its 57th annual show Saturday, Jan. 18, with two concerts at Manchester High School, 134 Middle Turnpike East.

The first show will be at 1:30 p.m. and the second show is at 7:30 p.m. in Bailey Auditorium.

Neal Kellogg, spokesman for the barbershop chorus, said doing themed shows is nothing new and the chorus has been doing it for years.

Previous themes include pirates and last year, Familiar Roads, where the script involved the chorus traveling around the country by bus, singing classic road songs such as Down Where the South Begins, California Dreamin, and Old Cape Cod.

Kellogg said the chorus doesnt view their performance as a concert, preferring to call it a show because its a bit more varied than just a concert.

It has a script, a theme, and jokes, and we try to add some laughs to the overall package, he said. Every year we try to come up with something different.

This years theme of The Singing Dead will bring the chorus attired as singing zombies.

I dont know where the zombie theme came from, but were not scary zombies, were friendly zombies, he said. Were not trying to scare the kids.

With a zombie theme comes trying to figure out what songs zombies would sing.

Some of the numbers that Kellogg said the audience will hear include the Frank Sinatra classic Im Gonna Live til I Die, Monty Pythons Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, If I Only Had a Brain from The Wizard of Oz, and Smile by Charlie Chaplin.

We have the hard core barbershoppers who come from all over New England, he said.

Kellogg called the show the biggest event in the barbershop world in New England with people traveling as far as Bangor to attend.

Its a great tradition, he said. They expect our themes to be a little zany and expect our guest quartets to be world class.

Guest performers will be the Tolland High School Chamber Choir, the 2019 fifth-place international quartet bronze medalist Midtown, and the 2019 international quartet champion Signature.

Theyre from Florida, Kellogg said. They have regular jobs during the week. They just love the hobby.

Midtown is a younger group and theyre probably all in their late 20s, he said. They are sort of the next generation barbershoppers.

Midtown has its own music video on YouTube where they sing the theme to Spider-Man while Peter Parker roams around New York City.

Tickets for the show are $28 for reserved premium seating, $23 for special seating, $20 for general admission, and $17 for senior and student general admission seating.

Tickets for an Afterglow party at Urban Lodge Brewing at 47 Purnell Place are $19 in advance and $25 at the door.
