Syracuses Run of the Dead canceled after 10 years; zombie walk still staggering on – syracuse.com

After 10 years of zombie fun, the Run of the Dead has been canceled.

Organizers announced with heavy zombie hearts over the weekend that there will be no Run of the Dead 5K race this year at the Syracuse Kickball Park on Route 57 in Liverpool. The annual event turned the kickball fields into a zombie obstacle course with runners being chased by the undead or actors in zombie makeup trying to bite them by grabbing their health flags typically as a fundraiser for a local charity.

The screaming fun faced obstacles of its own in recent years, including being forced to do a virtual race in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event returned in 2021 with a Rise from Quarantine theme, but now there are concerns with costs and a shortage of staff and volunteers.

We love it, but its become too much, said Andrew Cherock, owner and director of operations for the Syracuse Sports Association, in a phone interview.

Signups for 2022 hadnt been sold yet, so no refunds need to be issued.

But will the ROTD rise from the grave next year?

I havent fully closed that door yet, Cherock told syracuse.com | The Post-Standard. Thats definitely a possibility.

Fans of the event can take heart (or brains) that the Walk of the Dead is still staggering on. The less running-intensive version of the 5K began in 2020 and will return for its third year this Halloween season.

The Walk of the Dead is a half-mile walk through the gates of hell to see if you can survive to the other side, featuring all your favorite horror characters, clowns and ghostly ghouls along the way. The bloodthirsty event will take place Fridays and Saturdays from 8-11 p.m., starting Sept. 30 through Oct. 29, at the Syracuse Kickball Park.

2022 WOTD tickets can be reserved at walkofthedead.ticketleap.com/walk-of-the-dead-2022/. Prices are $17 for adults and $14 for children; guests 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
