The Walking Dead creator finally reveals cause of zombie virus after bringing comics to an end – The Sun

THE Walking Deads zombie virus outbreak has remained shrouded in mystery since the beginning of the AMC drama.

Viewers fist insights into the apocalypse came when Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awoke from a coma, only to discover the world had fallen to ruin and mankind had been morphed into undead monsters.

Since then, weve seen the survivors understand more and more about how the virus works for example, the fact that everyone is a carrier and will rise from the dead even if they havent been bitten.

However, while there have been insights into the symptoms, the origins of the disease have escaped the shows protagonists.

The only character to claim understanding about the outbreak was Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt), and even he later admitted that hed been bluffing the entire time.

With this in mind, series creator Robert Kirkman, who wrote the comics upon which The Walking Dead is based, no doubt left fans jaws on the floor when he casually revealed what kick-started the fall of man on Twitter.

A fan wrote to Kirkman: Hey, so we never got an answer even with the comic finished, what caused the zombies?

Claiming the outbreak was of extra-terrestrial origins, he shot back: Space spore.

Its not the first time Kirkman has teased that alien forces factor into the virus.

In a bonus ending for comic #75, Michonne revealed that aliens had unleashed the virus to weaken humanity before enslaving them and forcing them to harvest water, which the aliens used as currency.

Then of course there was the fallen satellite opening sequence in the shows season 10 premiere, which saw a Russian technology falling out of space and landing on the border of the allied territories.

Back in 2018, Kirkman said the outbreak could only be blamed on "a crazy sci-fi thing that would make the story all that much weirder.

Well, wed say mission accomplished with the space spore.

The same year, he joked during a Tumblr Q&A: Maybe years after its all over Ill just casually mention it in an interview.

"It couldnt be less important to the story and the lives of these characters. It would be completely out of place in the story.

Honestly if a scientist from Washington came to the character and told them what happened the characters would just shrug and say 'Oh okay' it wouldnt change their lives at all and Ive said too much."

Kirkman ended his long-running comic book series last year after a whopping 193 issues news that AMC execs admitted caught them off guard.

However, show bosses have since insisted that they have plenty of material to work with and arent afraid to stray from the graphic novels.

The Walking Dead returns to FOX in the UK on February 24 and will be available to stream on NOW TV.
