The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman dropped the franchises first-ever comic back in 2003, but only now has he revealed what actually caused the zombie apocalypse.

After 17 years of speculation, the 41-year-old has finally put our minds to rest by confirming where the disease came from.

And it turns out the walkers have basically been infected by an alien illness.

Taking to Twitter, a fan thought theyd put the question to the main man, asking: Hey @RobertKirkman, so we never got an answer even with the comic finished, what caused the zombies?

And while they probably didnt expect to get a reply, the writer simply put: Space spore.

Roberts followers were left curious as to whether or not he was just teasing them, adding: Thanks! Did I miss an issue or was it never specially said ? Or is that really the answer.

With another adding: I know youre joking but I just did the entire science of this in my head. Im going with it.

However, someone went onto explained: If you ever read the pilot issue #1 of TWD, it started with a nod to Night of the Living Dead, with a newscaster talking about the dead coming to life.

In the movie, the news reporter also talks about a contaminated space probe from Venus that crash-landed before the dead walked.

While the comics kept the origin a mystery, we could potentially find out the cause in the series, which is starting to stray further and further away from the original plot.

Samantha Morton, who plays Alpha, recently addressed this where she told fans not to assume her comic book ending.

When asked about whats to come for the Whisperer leader, and how much time she has left on the show, the 42-year-old smiled: Is it coming to an end? Thats what you assume.

This is the thing about AMC and the comic book world, you just dont know what they have in store, the actress added to Red Carpet News.

Episode two was a flashback episode, and I didnt see that coming up. I was like, Oh wow, we get to go back to the past. So you just never know. Just when you think it cant get any scarier, it does.

The Walking Dead season 10B kicks off Monday 24 February on FOX in the UK.
